I'm betting they had to replace the whole drive train. Engine, transmission, axles (or at least the internals). But still $30K sounds a little high.
my guess is the 30k is an overblown estimate using basic labor rates and parts for an entire drivetrain and likely wiring harness and other odd bits.

I wonder if insurance will cover...

No doubt it's overblown. And for the article I'm sure some rounding up was done. That said, they state this did not include labor.

Now Iā€™m thinking ā€œ$30Kā€ is just the punchline to ā€œAn idiot walks into a garageā€.

Was anyone else surprised that the linked TikTok video had not been edited for language?!

The owners manual says to put the transmission in 1st gear, and the transfer case in neutral.
He just pulled the transfer case shifter a bit too far.

Too far! How did they not know they bypassed N for 4Lo. I flat tow a Wrangler and it's a pain to get the transfer case into N much less 4Lo. Also, how do you not check the indicator light on the dash. It tells you what gear your in. After putting the transfer case in N the owners manual tells you to put the jeep in gear and give it a little gas to see if you have any movement to ensure you are in N. This was just someone rushing to go camping and didn't take their time to make sure they were hooked up for towing properly.

Good catch. Even more of an exaggerated number then!

Utilizing the 1:84.2 tow ratio.

Oh, no doubt.
I was just pointing out how it couldā€™ve happened.
I always start mine to be certain itā€™s in neutral.

You would think the sound of the engine exploding would have alerted the driver something was wrong.

I wonder if anyone was behind them when that motor puked itā€™s guts out the bottom at highway speed. Watch out for cartwheeling pistons, connecting rods and block parts!!
