Yeah, this is the right area because it's not my JT - but my wife's brand-spanking-new 2021 Grand Cherokee with 500 miles on it.
She said the other day it didn't feel right. Then today she went into town for some groceries and came back saying "my Jeep was jerking and jumping on the way home".
I plugged in my MX+ ODB thing, connected to my phone and just for speed connected Torque app to it and bingo - while it was idling in the driveway "P0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected" and then "Pending P0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected"
I took it out a mile, turned around and came back - WOW, she was not only not exaggerating, she was understating the issue - that thing was more kicking than missing. It was a constant KICK for a while, then it smoothed out most of the trip back.

Apparently it doesn't store the misfire code as it had no stored codes. I was hoping it did have.

All I can say is that sucks!

Hope its not a long drawn out fix like some others with their JTs.

Man that sucks! What are you planning to do?
I told my wife - do not drive it any more except to get it to the dealer. Well, she rarely drives it anyway. The 2018 GC we traded for this one we'd owned short of 3 years and it had about 13,500 on it. She had no plans on going anywhere or driving until next Friday. I said don't rely on just taking it there and getting it back the same day - if it's a simple ignition thing or injector, yeah, MAYBE, but......
At least it's not the dreaded "multi-cylinder misfire" which I think is code P0300
I have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow AM otherwise I'd take it in there myself. She does want me to be there or take it as I'll know exactly how to describe it and can show them the logs. So - either we take it in at 7am tomorrow and then I hit my appointment, or we take it in another day. Might as well sit there as at home.
It wasn't just a miss - I mean it kicked like a pissed mule when it misfired. A 6 with a miss is more subtle than this was. Almost like the timing was advanced beyond belief for that one cylinder.

I guess I must be dumb but as a proud member of the (people who don't work for FCA club), I have to ask,

How can it possibly make sense that this events aren't logged?

Were they not logged because you already read them or do they not survive a power cycle?

It seems like it should. Am I missing something?

Fingers crossed it’s just a bad coil pack...on the passenger side.
I find it interesting that MOPAR switched things up over the years.

- a V8 from GM, etc. has odd cylinders on the left (USA driver side) and even numbered cylinders on the right (USA passenger side)
Most V6s I've dealt with follow the GM/AMC numbering with 1,3, 5 on the left, and 2, 4, 6 on the right side with number 1 front left, number 6, rear cylinder right side.
Even more interesting - the Jeep 3.7 has the cylinder numbers swapped. 1 is left or USA driver side front. Even cylinders on the right or USA passenger side.
Then you go to the old Fords, like the 289 and 1,2,3,4 are on the right, 5,6,7,8 on the left or driver side!

I tried 3 software options on this GC and the most thorough was the AlfaOBD but ironically, it wasn't able to read the engine controls - and then it gave me pages of info. It is apparently too new a vehicle for AlfaOBD so I submitted a report (it's automated) to them about the connection errors to this Jeep's modules.
IF AlfaOBD is correct - IF - it's ignition failure, but given the errors from the software about not being able to read engine module, I have no idea............
especially when it's giving turbo boost info and says ethanol content is 0.
(it's a GASOLINE 3.6 and the tank is full of 10% blend)

Does any of the experts here know what this from AlfaOBD is saying? It's a message it sent out to home while I was trying to further check into my wife's GC engine miss -
It seems to have read some info - but - is that info accurate given the below error it sent to its creator?

Unsupported control module:
ECU ID: 6829
ISO Code:
VarVer: 68/49

All I can say is that sucks!

Hope its not a long drawn out fix like some others with their JTs.
are you on the latest revision ecu flash?

A 2021 Grand Cherokee was picked up in November 2020 a day after the truck dropped it off at the dealership so should be reasonably current or maybe have the very latest, either one. But I can't specifically say it is or isn't as it's not been touched other than being prepped and me plugging in to diagnose.

I did do the flash update for the OBDLink MX+ bluetooth adapter, and it's a fresh download of AlfaOBD.

I did find it odd that AlfaOBD wasn't able to fully recognize this Jeep so maybe the Jeep is ahead of the Alfa software - is that where you may be headed?

I guess I must be dumb but as a proud member of the (people who don't work for FCA club), I have to ask,

How can it possibly make sense that this events aren't logged?

Were they not logged because you already read them or do they not survive a power cycle?

It seems like it should. Am I missing something?
I took it to the dealer today.
First thing the service writer said (and he seems to know a bit like he's been in the shop before) he said "since it's random, not constant, comes and goes, it won't trigger the MIL or set a code. If there wasn't a miss at the time of shutdown, it's not saved.
And that jives with some things I've read about "cylinder misfire detected" errors, as well as certain other errors.

I noticed the miss as soon as it started warming up (it was in the teens when I headed to town). It jumped and bucked randomly, once in a while several misses in succession, then only now and then. The first part of the trip was speed limit 40-45 on winding hilly roads. With my wife following me in my WJ, I stuck to the speed limit.
Then came time to merge onto the HWY65/69 bypass and 65 limit. The traffic was heavy - it was commute time. I punched it as I swung around the ramp and onto the highway and - crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. The thing smoothed out, settled down and was smooth as silk and took off like a striped-a......... well, anyway, it took off great!

Then the last 10 miles on the highway, 65-70, hills and flats, it did fine.
It "seemed" at first glance to miss at lower rpm and low road speeds and do better at higher rpm AND higher road speeds. Hitting a hill and getting over 2,000 rpm while doing 40 it still missed.
Either that or the wind blew some wires around and it settled down. Weird, but the COMBINATION of high road speed AND high rpm was ok - and that's the part I was concerned with.

I told the guy it was going to behave fine for them -so I handed them the two printouts I got using Torque and AlfaOBD softwares on two different days - both showing the same P0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected.

We'll see, I guess, if they get to it today. Had an appointment but they looked to be SWAMPED.
And - the ESS kept saying "stop/start not ready" and my wife said last time she drove it, it never shut off at stops, either.

Yeah, well, I must not be tech savvy in automotive applications.

I am a computer "guy" for many years and I know you are as well ...

Logs are the stuff of GOLD when troubleshooting ... I cant for the life of me understand why they would not log ANY misfires (even if seemingly random in nature). More data is always better than less and memory is cheap ...

Guess I just dont understand the logic of throwing away events that "may" be of value ... If not needed, flush them later ...

There would need to be a way to increment and save only if there were more than x events with the same cylinder in a given time. They could do it, it wouldn't take any real memory space.
Logging one misfire out of thousands of cycles wouldn't work, but I'd think if you have a certain number, especially of the same cylinder, within a given timeframe, it should be logged until read and cleared.
Maybe other manufacturers do - these days OBDII isn't just OBDII. Each manufacturer has their own standards beyond or besides the mandated basics (which are pretty basic compared to modern vehicles)

Having driven the thing up there myself, I'm really glad I printed the times I was connected to it and "caught it in the act" as it was pretty smooth pulling into their check-in area. At least now they have proof it happened, on multiple days, etc.

I cannot find ANY information on this TSB - I find one post in a Wrangler forum about someone had a misfire and the dealership replaced the spark plugs under TSB 09-013-20 REV A for "misfire".
It was running smooth the last few miles getting there, they said they had trouble getting it to misfire but did catch it twice. They found nothing stored, and nothing specific showed up in troubleshooting as it was running smooth at that time - they dug and found the above TSB and replaced the plugs according to the TSB 09-013-20 REV A
Anyone have a copy of it or a link to it, etc.?

My wife said it behaved just fine all the way home (about a 35 minute drive, varied speeds and roads)

No wonder it took them a while to get back with us - nothing simple about 3.6 spark plug replacement.
