I have a friend out west that came across a gladiator with some special badging on it... it had Michigan tags on it, and tape over the rear badging. Having the diesel badging on the gladiator is a really good hint that they are very close, if not already in production. Unfortunately he didn’t get any other pics before it drove off, would have liked to see the exhaust compared to the wrangler diesel spy shots, and of course one with the hood open (but we all know that wouldn’t happen)

No manual = no diesel for me. I know what everyone's going to say, but I don't pull a trailer all the time and this thing's going to be a daily driver for me. I'll just patiently wait for FCA to spray the bed liner in my 6-speed JTR and enjoy.

That's why I didn't wait for the diesel. The extra power would have been fantastic but no way I'm giving up the manual for it. If there was going to be a manual option with it I would have definitely waited.

Anyone know .....
1) the estimated additional cost of the diesel engine?
2) the estimated fuel mileage benefit of the diesel?

We can’t figure that without the EPA rating or the actual price of the option. We don’t even have good speculation on the milage yet. The price MIGHT be $4995.

That said, the ROI isn’t going to be great and, IMO, no one should buy this engine for that reason. The real reason is to take advantage of all that torque and potentially for the increased range that could make this a boon for overlanders. I’m looking at the diesel because I’ll be towing through the Rockies and the 3.6l performance on I-70 leaves a lot to be desired.

All signs point to $5k uplift on cost. Benefits are subjective.

they might release this in time for my purchase, as much as i like a stick shift i do like the sound of a quiet diesel powerhouse so I'd settle for an automatic, mmm

hydro blue rubicon diesel, named Turquoise Girl
I want a black Rubicon diesel. I will call him Coal.

longer range definitely the best prospect from this setup
Forced induction is a big part for me, since I travel over high mountain passes regularly. Plus I truly believe the MPGs will be significant once it's lifted and loaded. The 3.6 is gutless at altitude under load. And VERY thirsty in these conditions.

I honestly don't care about any extra power or cost savings. I am 100% in it for the range. I want to be able to go further on one tank. Yes, that are Jerrys, Aux tanks, bigger tanks...etc, but that all means I go even further with same amount of fuel.

If I wanted to save money on fuel or motor choices, I sure wouldn't buy a jeep.

Too bad there is no manual though.
