Headed up a mountain for work today, and there was 8-10 inches of new, wet, heavy snow. The customer was driving his F-150 with reasonable tires, and he got about half way.
We went back and got the Gladiator, chained up the rear, and made it about 50 feet further in 4Hi. Pulled it into 4Lo and got a bit further.
I think, “What the hell,” and engage Selec-Speed. It grunts and groans, and climbs right up the road, at 2-3mph.
We were going slow enough that the tires just crawled right over the snow, rather than plowing it and getting stuck.
I was impressed, but, more importantly, so was the customer!
At the top…

Nice. I never thought to try it in snow. Now I will for sure. Thanks.

For us MT folks, is that the same as just letting the engine run @ idle in 1st/2nd gear in 4LO and letting it "walk" up the hill (or over rocks, through the snow, etc)?

Put the transfer case in 4Lo, and push the button on the dash that looks like it’s for a hill descent mode…
It’s covered in the manual.

Kevin
Duck mode?

It is really great. I've used it on some tight trails while climbing a hill before, and enjoyed setting it and then just focusing on steering to avoid some body damage.

I've wondered if I did the paddle shifter mod, if I'd be able to use the paddles to control the mph instead of the shifter. That'd be really cool and if I knew it would work for sure, then I have to go attack my wallet again...

Seriously, thanks to Kevin - not sure I would have thought of using duck mode to let it crawl out of a bind in the snow. Let it take control and manipulate things faster and more coordinated than humanly possible while you simply keep it on the trail.

Someone needs to attempt this and find out...cause that's a game changer with paddle shifters. My only complaint on duck mode is the shifter.

Is “Duck Mode” the official feature name yet? If not it needs to be 😂

We used it last Spring on a trail in George Washington National Forest, climbing from Switzer Lake to Flag Pole Knob, and it was great. We didn't need it for the traction, but it's a long trail and once you get your ground speed set to where you want it you can just cruise along and enjoy the scenery.
