I've got the numbers in detail. There's MSRP for everything from the base truck to every option. Then there's FWP - which is the "invoice" price they are using.
I've done the math, and when you get 5% under invoice, it's 5% under that FWP
When tread lightly says you get 1% under invoice, it works out to 1% under that FWP which is Factory Wholesale Price.

So you'd buy off the lot and then forever do without something you maybe really wanted.
Buying off the lot just to be done with it makes no sense to me just to have it now and then spend years without what you REALLY wanted.
Do you buy other things that way - gee, I'll take this house because it's cheaper even though it's 30 minutes farther from work and it's only 2 bedroom (but you have 4 kids)

I searched for hours, the whole country, literally, no one had ANY Overland that had the equipment I wanted, not even in 2nd or 3rd choice colors. Why bother buying if you can't end up with what you really need or want?

In my mind people are nuts to pay MSRP or above unless they're not in a position to wait for that custom order. From what I've seen most (even local) dealerships will honor affiliate discounts (e.g. Tread Lightly). That's 1% below invoice, which is a huge discount over paying MSRP.

My dealership doesn't charge a separate doc fee either. But at the end of the day, the final price is what matters. They are going to make their money either way, the doc fee is just already included on dealerships that don't charge it.

If you're still getting a good price, even with the doc fee, why harp over it? The only times I've ever had a problem paying one is when the dealership doesn't tell you about it until the end, and you don't find out until you're going over terms. I walk out of those dealerships.

Doc fees are legislated state-to-state. Some states say dealerships can’t charge them. Some states set the doc fee for all dealerships in the state. And some states just say dealerships can charge any doc fee they want, but they MUST charge all customers the same fee.

The end result is, if your dealership is allowed by law to charge a doc fee, you’re going to pay it. Period. You can’t get out of it.

Now, if you want to negotiate the price of the vehicle lower to make up for the doc fee, that’s a different story. But you can’t not pay the fee.

For example, dealerships around me charge a $600-800 doc fee. By law, they have to charge this fee to EVERY customer, because they’ve labeled it a “fee”. No matter what, your sales contract will include this fee. However, I always negotiate the price of the vehicle an additional $600-800 lower to negate this fee. So technically, I’m not paying the doc fee, even though the sales contract says that I am.

Or maybe I am paying, because I could’ve negotiated the price even lower. Who knows? Who cares? I certainly don’t care what anyone else pays for their truck. As long as I’m happy and the salesperson is happy, then it doesn’t matter. So let’s move on. Ok?
