I needed to transport a 12 foot counter top. Vendor would not deliver. My trailer is under 9 ft. Found the Bed Extension at Harbor Freight for $59.00. Worked great, stable, no rattle. The horizontal beam is a little smaller than 2 inch.... that why it leans down from the hitch. Vendor says 350 lb load limit...doubt the hitch will take much more than that.
I like the bed extender. It breaks down into two pcs that can be stored easily. I won't have to put 10 and 12 ft material thru the back window anymore, and will be able to haul a kayak without a trailer.

I grab a couple of extra flags and nails when I go to Home Depot and keep them under the rear seat.

Yes they do. Unfortunately Floor and Decor didn't have any flags and I failed to bring one with me.

When I first got my gladiator back in 2020 I had to transport some long plywood as a noob I didn't know I had to attach a flag. Luckily while having lunch with a buddy he let me know and quickly ran to homedepot.

Thought experiment for the day: if you installed a single 10” wheel under the end of that contraption so that it could support more weight - would that legally be considered “a trailer”? (e.g. would it require registration, lights, etc)

I’m no lawyer - and it probably wouldn’t matter if I was because I doubt there’s any case law out there on this. But I can see the argument that it is merely an extension of the motor vehicle, not a separate vehicle.

A modification like this could easily double if not triple the capacity of such a device. Making it safer while only minimally impacting the portability and storage space when not in use.

Any lawyers out there specializing in motor vehicle law?

It would just be an attachment of the vehicle. A 10” wheel would for sure help the load capacity as long as you are not going to far. The 10” wheel would be going way faster than the vehicle making it overheat and blow out

I have racks (removable) mounted on my cap which, with the addition of a Gutter-mount rack over the front doors allows me to carry longer material than I could on my old Ford Excursion.

Not sure about license requirements....but you would not be able to turn without bending the extension. There is such a trailer that has two mounts near the rear frame, with a single wheel at the back. Designed to carry a load with added advantage of being able to back up easily. I've seen these on RV to carry a motorcycle. But you will have more expense and material to store when not in use
