I just realized that the pioneer tool rack on military HMMWVs that is mounted under the bed where the fuel tank would be mounted on most vehicles would be a great way to mount three essential tools, shovel, axe and pick all in one place. I took the rack and tool assembly off my 1985 M998 (last two pics). The ax and pick are full size and the shovel is 37 inch full size head unit. Estimated weight of the tool complete rack is about 35 lbs. The rack is 47 inches in length with all the tools installed which now that I think about it the rack will fit on the inside of the tailgate and still clear the inside of the bed when closed. Another good place to mount these. The front mounting point on these racks (bottom of 1st pic, left on 2nd) doubles as a handle that allows you to carry this compact trio of tools very easily as one unit. Current plan is to mount the rack to side rails I am going to install on my bed rack. Plan is to mount the rack mounting bracket on the upper rail and use some kind of bolt/wing nut combo on the bottom part of the rack to secure the whole assembly to the side racks. Then you could you could remove the bottom wing nuts and slide the tool rack up and off with all three tools still attached. Easy way to carry all three tools to your campsite or where ever. You can always remove a tool individually if desired. The fourth picture is the rack used on most military vehicles up to current stuff that holds the same three tools. Depending on your setup that rack could be another option to store three essential tools. It will be sometime before I complete the fabrication but when done I will post pics. Here is a ebay listing for the rack and one that is the forward mounting bracket on the HMMWV which in plan on using on the upper side rail.

One of the damn fine designs for them but the location always sucked.... Especially when it's stuck in mud. Been there done that. I wanted to get one of those racks and mount it on my XJ but at the time I was still in Army so a no can do then. A plus is you can fab up a locking mechanism for it to secure tools, but adds extra lbs of useless weight over some options. Definitely post up photos when you do it.

I may consider the location of the rack after this dry fit of the unit. It’s just sitting on the bed in this picture.
