Those work, never used one on my JT and not planning to. In the vw tuning world they are pretty common when you tune for higher power. Not sure if that is because of the extra power or because after tuning you are more likely to be getting on it, increasing blow by. the service every 30-40k to clean the valves is not cheap think it ran at least $200ish on my GTI. Running a catch can saves money if nothing else. Note you have to check it every so often and clear it out having one with a built in dip stick is nice. I have a Mishimoto intercooler and charge pipes in the dub and they are the highest of build quality.

Do you think it's worth it for prolonged engine life?

I have a Mishimoto Catch Can installed. Don't really hear/see/feel anything different post install. Maybe less white exhaust smoke on cold start.

Needed far more so on a turbo charged gas and or diesel application. By reducing oily vapors in the intake of a turbo gas Motor you effectively reduce the likelihood of detonation due to the oil vapor reducing your octane value. In the diesel it’s more for keeping oil out of the intake so that 1 your intercooler works more efficiently and 2 so the soot that is pumping through your system is not combined with the oil vapor forming sludge
I don’t have one on my 3.0 because apparently the diesel is susceptible to a cel if it senses any difference in the system. Personally I don’t have experience or knowledge of a need for a catch can on a non turbo gas engine. Probably won’t hurt but probably not needed either. Now if you plan on super charging ??

My understanding is that they are more useful on forced induction engines ( I have one on my evo 9) and direction injection motors. DI engines don't have the benefit of fuel washing over the valves to help keep them clean. But I would say removing any amount of oil vapor from the intake charge would be a good thing. I haven't seen any in depth data on it though.

I installed one I purchased from Amazon, it catches a bunch of stuff, lots more condensation in colder weather. Mine is around 8 ounces and needs to be emptied every 2500 miles or so. Couple other long threads on them as well, I have about $40 in mine figured it can’t hurt.

If you're not doing severe rock climbing or hill climbing, and you don't have any power adders (turbo, blower) then no, not really needed.

easy to empty?

My catch can has a drain hose that runs down to the driver side wheel well. Open the ball valve and whatever is in the can drains out. I drain after 2 to 3k miles.
