Have started towing a bit with my JT and decided to finally take the regear plunge. Long story short, I’d like to have this done through the dealership based on the JPP warranty for dealership-installed accessories as well as the overall vehicle warranty. I have about a year left of the initial 3yr/36k, and a supplemental Max Care plan to 8yr/60k beyond that. I only have about 5500 miles on the truck so I’d like to keep as much of the warranty coverage available where possible (and extended to the more expensive mods).

I have seen a few different parts lists for the OEM regear job. Some include a new pinion nut and new pinion flange kit, some do not. It appears the main “extra” expense is the lack of master install kit from MOPAR. The street price for the R&P’s themselves appears to be ~$395, which is more than reasonable.

If you have had your truck regeared by the dealership, could you potentially share a receipt or work order? Please feel free to hide any personal info. I’m mainly curious about the part numbers used beyond the R&P, and the labor you were charged. I’d like to work with the service advisor to make sure we get the job quoted correctly and get the right parts en route…especially with the strike going on 🤒

Thanks for any help!

Haven't done one at the dealership, but I'd be very leery of any shop that would regear an axle without replacing the pinion nut and ring gear bolts.

Bearings are iffy- in theory with the proper tools they can be pulled off and reused, but unless you are 100% sure you can and your factory bearings have extremely low mileage, I really don't see the point in reusing bearings either. Carrier bearings are one things if you're keeping the same carrier, pinion bearings are completely different and I would say they almost HAVE to be replaced. Crush sleeve would have to be replaced as well. Not sure how you get the pinion seal out and guarantee you don't damage it either.

overall, if the shop isn't recommending you replace all the wear items inside the chunk, I'd be cautious.

They should know what to use.

Master install kits are what you need.

Part #10040469 for the front and #10040478 for the rear.

I once had a regear done at a dealer, but it was many years ago and my brother was the service advisor.

MOPAR does not sell a master kit, and dealerships don’t sell Dana parts. Hence the question, as each part of the install “kit” is sold as an individual line-item MOPAR part. Thank you though!

I'm sorry, I misunderstood your first post.

When you said "It appears the main “extra” expense is the lack of master install kit from MOPAR", I thought you meant the dealers were choosing not to use it.

I had some issues a few years ago so i may miss a few points here, but be sure you ask questions before you re-gear just so ya know. This is kinda long, but it happened over the course of a few months before I found out the reason. If you make it through I hope it helps.

2020 Rubicon. 3.5" lift, 37's, re-geared with 4.88, use a Tazer.
About 2 yrs ago, get in one day, drive off heading down the road and I get an error message of some sort on my dash display. I don't remember what the display actually said. But i was like...huh?
Nothing seems to 'not' work so I thought it was a glitch that fixed itself. Nope.

A few weeks later I'm driving from Phoenix to Durango, CO to pick up my bud of 50 yrs for our annual guy trip. Pass a HyPo, lights come on, I pull over, he says I'm doing 80. The speed limit was 65 and had just dropped to 55. But, I dont speed like that. I do 5-7 over and that's it unless I need to quickly pass. Again, I thought nothing of it, though it was just me.

I get back on the highway, i'm doing my 5-7 over in the 65 zone and I'm blowing by people. So I get out my phone and see what the speed app says I'm doing. The app i happen to pull open says I'm doing 70 which is what the Jeep speedo says i'm doing. I still didnt believe it. Open the ipad, it says i'm doing 79. That I believe. But i cannot figure out what's up. Oh, the phone was plugged into the Jeep. The app was reading the speed from the Jeep, not the acutal speed. The ipad was reading actual speed. So now i'm way confused.

Eventually make it to Durango then on to Telluride. Get out on the trails, shift into 4L, disconnect the swaybar, roll 20-30 ft, get a SERV 4WD message and the swaybar reconnects. This continues for the duration of the trip. None of the features that required me to be in 4L were working. I think I have a jacked up computer or something. I'm completely lost.

I get back, take it to the dealer, after I disconnect the Tazer. They cannot figure out what's going on. I get to talking with the service manager. He asks if I have/use a Tazer, I tell him I did but I don't think i'm going to put it back on. He asks why not, that thing is awesome. So now I'm not sure how to take this. I thought using the Tazer would void some warranty stuff. We chit-chat, he tells me he's on my side, he's a Jeep guy and understands how modding goes.

What this all boils down to...the first error message I got, before my trip to Colorado, the Tazer had unmarried for some reason from the Jeep. So now the Jeep thinks it is back to stock settings, 4.25 and 32's(???) I forget what factory tires came with it. That explains the speed error, but what about the SERV 4WD.

The manager said there are so many sensors that if any number of them get a reading that is out of range it will default to taking away features so nothing is damaged. 4.88 and 37's had to many readings out of range so the Jeep thought something was wrong. i.e. tranny speed dependent on gear vs axle rotation vs drive shaft rotation vs speed. I asked him about re-gearing, and if my memory is correct I thought he said 4.88's could void the warranty. He said 4.88's were not approved by Jeep.

This was all in 2021 so Jeep may have changed some things. I only say this to make sure you ask questions. Good luck.

Cheers, j-

Yeah, they do, and have for years. At least some do, especially the larger ones.
The car I used to have had a line item on the invoice that said "gear ratio" - dealer installed gear set.

We were trained in college on gear replacement and setup.

A good dealership knows the drill - and exactly what to change in the settings for the new ratio.
One dealer not far from me takes new JTs and JLs and modifies them with accessories, including deeper gears. Their accessory guy even told me they'd "sell me a device to change the settings so I could do that myself instead of pay them to do it". My bet - he was talking tazer.

Went to the dealership recently to get axel fluid. I am changing my diff covers and needed fresh fluid (oil). The dealerships are out of the diff fluid. back ordered until at least December. Now with the strike who knows. You will need aftermarket fluid which is not a problem but the dealership may refuse to use it.
