New Garage/Shop

Work already started on the cement slab for my garage/shop. We already had a finished pad for our camper with full hookups but decided it would serve us best if we place the garage in that spot. We will reutilize the RV hookups on a small 1/2 bath. My plan is a 2 post car lift, work bench and garage cabinets as well as a small gym area with some free weights, water rowing machine and a spinning bike. The size of the garage will be 24Wx25Dx12H walls. Will have space to store by YJ, SXS and ATV. Decided on going with the same color scheme as our other garage next it. Super excited about this project.

The plan view shows the ATV and SXS. Where are you going to put the YJ?

IMO, go bigger, or at least go deeper if you can. My 36 x 36 garage seemed huge at first, but now I wish it were bigger.

YJ in front of ATV. Couldn't go bigger due to cement cost in the area being too high. Just for the slab we are looking at roughly the same cost as the garage. Had to leave funds for the lift and other equipment.

Looks good! But at the scale, your truck is 4' x 9.5'... I think with the JT you are going to lose a really good chunk of your gym space. I'm with Jac... I think you need to go a lot deeper... a standard attached 2 car garage is usually ~22x22

EDIT: get some stakes and twine, and layout your plan and hard fixtures, then park in the layout to get a better idea about your space... the JT is just over 18' long stock...

I figured if I needed space for work I would park the YJ and ATV under the carport.

The vehicle on the right bay is the SXS. The truck is going to be parked in the other garage. Only time in the new garage should be for maintenance and work with the lift.

I have the JT in the design program. I used the exact dimensions for the JTR. It's not on the image but you can drag the truck and place it inside the garage and simulate it being on the lift. I still have about 5 feet to the front and 3 feet to the sides while on the lift. It all came to wants vs how much I could put into this project considering the work on the guest cabin and the main house. I'm tapped out for the year funds wise. Also have a pond project but will have to happen next year also.

Initially I wanted to go with a tree bay metal barn garage 44' wide by 30' deep but I got the quotes for the slab and slight earth work I almost fainted. The cheapest was $26k.

Here are some views from the design program I used. The truck on the lift is up to the scale of a JT although it is a generic image. The vehicle next to it is supposed to be SXS to scale. The cabinet the right is an infrared sauna.

That's not much room to work. Pull your Jeep up next to your house, three feet away and then jack it up and try to rotate the tires or simulate pulling a axle. Spread some tools around to have something to dance around and trip over. I know you are just trying to service your own vehicle but you are setting yourself up for some big regrets if you cut corners now. I've seen more than one guy work outside with a perfectly good rack inside because they figured they could save that money and work out of a dinky stall.

The size of your lot and budget will dictate the end results. In 2013 I hired a builder to erect a garage
24' x 36', the lower ceiling height is 10' and I now wish it were higher. However that was dictated by
the loft above. A year later we added a 12' shed roof extension to the far end. Included in my original plan was a woodshop area and although I intended to build my own cabinetry I actually bought
Gladiator metal cabinets to speed things along. Also ran a cold water line from the house for
handwashing, car washing etc, propane fired heat (after one disastrous winter with a space
heater) which keeps the interior above freezing in the winter. Later we also added an electric
Incinolet toilet (could not tie into septic system). Over the years I added a flammable liquids
safety cabinet, wire shelving (to minimize dust collection), a reloading area for firearms and
many,many tools I didn't have room for before. My builder did have the foresight to make one
bay door tall enough for my larger tractor with ROPS to fit through, I wish I had thought of a
hoist of some sort at the time. This was to have been my 'man cave' per the wife, but one of
my gripes is that everyone who sees an empty space now wants to store something there.
After 11 years I'd like to report it as done, but we always think of something new. I had thought
of finishing off the concrete slab someday but it is now so full of stuff it's hard to even see
concrete. Do not know the climate where you are located so heat may not be needed but
electricity will be as I'm sure you have included. I planned for a large air compressor and
pre-wired accordingly, but when it came time to install we learned another larger gauge line was needed since I planned to do sandblasting. It pays to plan ahead for unseen contingencies,
also you don't have to do everything at once. That said do get it done before you are too old
to enjoy it to the fullest.

Nice, very nice. Everybody pushing you into bigger shop, ignore them be happy you can have one unless they are going to pay for it. Lot of us don’t have one. The ZJ in my profile picture I pulled the engine/transmission and transfer case in one shot with my service truck crane in a surprise rainstorm next to our driveway 8 years ago had it all hanging on the hook so was committed, 2 years later put it all back in during a surprise snow storm. Pulled and rebuilt/regeared axles, did the lift and all the undercarriage work on the concrete driveway. Wife had enough of that shit after couple weeks. Got 5 ATVs behind my house in whatever make shift damn thing I can come up with so the UV doesn’t destroy them, Have a 50 and 110 under our covered patio. So hell yeah congrats on the building.

Might want to move the 2 post lift farther in unless you. Have roll up doors.
