So I'm jumping the gun a little. Doing everything online and the dealership I'm buying from is in a tiny town and they were having a bit of a hard time using my already procured financing and don't have DocuSign so I'm waiting for the overnight package (mailing out tomorrow, I'm dying over here) to physically sign, ink to paper.... but I'm excited and I want to have everything ready to go! I've wanted a Jeep for years (have had 2 GCs loved them but decided it was time for a "real" Jeep- no insult intended) so now it's time to make the fun California sun worth my while and earn some cool mom points with my 15 year old while I'm at it!!

I got the Overland, great price, phenomenal price BUT I love the look of beefy tires and a lift so I ordered the 2' mopar lift with FOX shocks and it is being installed before I pick up the Jeep. It will be my daily driver, so I didn't want to go too big or too bold but I like fun too and we do go fishing, shooting, camping, tailgating...so I'm staying "reasonable" and want to do 35" tires...

So here's to the real questions:
How do I know what size wheel and tire to buy?
How do I determine that width tire a particular wheel can accommodate? I keep seeing 12.5 with 35" is that a must have width?
Does the 17" or 18" or 20" affect anything other than look? I like the look of the 17" with the 35" tire but as much as I want the "look" I want safety and integrity too??!
Ok I guess you can tell I'm super excited...cause I'm rambling...

Any help, or suggestions are appreciated and I even understand if at this point y'all are thinking "damn girl you're dumb" but you can keep that part to yourself lol!!

Do 17” rims if your planning on going off road... the extra sidewall vs the others will give you a more comfortable ride... plus you can air them down too.

Thanks for the answer. Makes sense and I know it's completely personal preference but I love the look of the smaller wheel bigger tire!
I'm excited but definitely feeling like I'm coming from behind the curve of "real" jeep peeps!!

For someone new to Jeeps it can no doubt be overwhelming. You have an advantage that you know how you'll be using it. DD with a little bit of fun off the beaten path.

Here are MY suggestions, but ultimately you need to decide.

1. Don't do anything.

Enjoy it as is and use it how you intend to. Get to know her. Take the time to read through this forum. Look at others' builds and compare to how you'll be using it. Then decide a few months later. Jeeps are more than capable in stock form than most others.

2. Be honest with yourself.

Despite some folks, it's ok to want it to look cool but never go off-road. Because at the end of the day it's your money and your Jeep. You need to feel good in it... Whatever that means to you.

3. Realize the fact that whatever you decide you'll probably change your mind later.

When I got my first Jeep it was a used 10th Anniversary JKU Rubi. It was when they first introduced the power hood and steel bumpers. I was sure I'd not mod it because it was beautiful as is.. Then I met some folks and decided to hit an off road park. The bug got me. And my needs changed.

4. If you want someone to answer your question directly, I'd suggest you start with just adding a 35", 12.5, 17 all terrain tire of your choice. Keep your stock rims. Based on your current need that will be more than enough yet be a decent DD.

Welcome to the club and don't forget to wave back.

Op don’t follow number 4 super closely.. your stock rims on an overland are 18’s so you could do 35/12.50r18 tires and the rest is very sound advice.

With the mopar lift stock tires would look way small. But you don’t have to change the wheels. If your not off-roading then go into whatever your local tire/wheel shop of choice is and pick out a set of wheels in a size somewhere between 17x8 and 20x10 that you like and then ask for some all terrain’s to match your driving style.
Really the beefy look your after though can be done with just tires. The rims make out even better and will likely give you a bit more tire sticking out the size.

Since you have the Overland, it’s going to have 18” wheels stock, so that changes the options a bit as you may need new wheels & tires if you want 17” wheels as your base.

Below is a good thread with some options that others with overlands went with. I personally wanted to improve the look and tires a bit, but wasn’t ready to throw 35s on it, so I grabbed some rubicon take offs to satisfy me for now. Congrats on the new Jeep!

Welcome!

I like the look of smaller wheels with more tire also! I went with 17's and a 35" tire and I Love the look and ride. If you're going with 17's, I would suggest 17x9 with a 5" backside/+1MM offset. This is just about perfect (really nice stance too) unless you like them hanging out the fender more than necessary. I also installed the 2" Mopar lift kit and I REALLY like it! It's just enough lift and it drives just as nice as stock, or maybe even better. I really love my Gladiator too!

Here's what mine looks like.

You can also go through websites like custom offsets who has a huge selection of wheels (though very slow to respond right now in customer service) and pages like tire rack & discount tire company where you can view the wheels on your truck. Just know that they sometimes only let you select the stock tire size when looking, but you can order whatever you want.

My son has had me browsing (drooling) through the custom offset wheels site for weeks now the benefit of a 15 year old boy on lockdown...lol! Unfortunately they stopped taking orders until mid next week so they’ll have to be my second set (that’s how things work around Jeeps, right? Keep on moving on up!!)

Thank you. I’m looking at your site now. Shipping is my biggest issue at this point. Need to get the tires to a tiny shop a couple hours from my house...
