Way back in July (wait.. That was only 2-3 months ago? Dang, where does the summer go?) I asked a question: "Am I just a wussy baby man, or was I smart (or at least cautious?)" At the time, I opted to not try driving the trail I was looking at on On-X...
Well, this past weekend the wife and I were up there again camping and I decided to go for it. The wife and I loaded into the Jeep, went up the South Straits Highway to M-68, got lucky and had no one behind us nor coming our way and made the left into the woods.
We started down trail LP76/7, which was QUITE sandy. Got passed by (let them by) several SxS riders so we weren't all alone in the wilds of Northern Lower Michigan. We had intended to take the trail all the way to Weber Lake State Forest Campground to check it out as a possible camping destination next year, but my nerves got the better of me, so we turned onto the Indian River Rte and eventually made our way out at the trailhead on the South Straits Highway.
A few times I thought I might be getting out to put the traction boards down, but some judicious and cautious throttle (and, eventually 4Hi) got us through. We didn't air down the tires at all, which might also have been a small mistake, but, again, we got through.
Next year? ALL THE WAY to Weber Lake!
