Oh, thatā€™s what that was, I used it for a bar of soap.
And scraping callouses off of the bottom of your feet.
Speaking of things that aren't what they used to be: the boots that they issue to these Marines nowadays are amazing. More comfortable than my favorite Nike's from the 70's.
I'm pretty sure that all of my back/hip/knee/ankle problems stem from the bloated roadkill leather boots with the soles harder than trigonometry that they used to issue us.

Drinking water from a hose instead of a plastic bottle. Riding a bike with no helmet. Lap belts only. Lots of things ain't what they used to be.
Lap belts? When I was a kid, the lap belts were stuffed behind/under the seats.
ā€™ANDā€¦ who else ever rode on the back deck tucked in the rear window? That was the final spot for a kid when the car was full.

We had the wagon with the reverse facing seat in the back. Sometimes we actually flipped it open and sat in the seat. I remember going through an Indian reservation in the late70ā€™s and my sister doing the had to mouth Indian call out the window! We were all freaking out because at that time they were taking pot shots at passers by.

Relatively certain the marines still issued colonial straight lasted boots to their recruits until recently.

at least the army pretends to care and gives us decent footwearā€¦though it doesnā€™t last through more than one ruck

My daughter just received medical retirement from MCT. broken femur and nerve damage. She recently gave birth to my first grandchild. Her husband is Marine Corpse intelligence. Iā€™m so proud and hope we as a country take care of them.

Hell I sat in the front seat when there wasn't a front middle seat belt. Except for dad's arm. I remembered pulling out the key from the ignition switch going around a corner. Way before locking steering columns
