a “pentastar engineer” said this on BITOG:

Its way more than just hours and RPM. FCA uses oil temp, air temp, load, rpm even fuel type (ethanol %) and more. It's super complicated but very impressive. I'm far from an expert but do know the OEM develops a perfect vs. reality algorithm based on those (and more) factors/inputs. They create a very controlled duty cycle that is basically the max oil life for that engine under ideal conditions. When you drive outside that cycle you are given a penalty per infraction against that perfect cycle (fractions of a percent). For example if you are super hard on it you get a "high blow by penalty" of value __%. Or maybe you ran the engine hard when it was cold AND cold outside (intake air temp data) because you were late for work in January. Resulting in a penalty of ___% kind of thing.

I don't know the specific details of those penalties but I do know (at the time) that is how the algorithm worked. Pretty interesting stuff.”
Well, the super-complicated advanced scientific doohicky usually reads right around 50% when I reset it.

I do 5,000 mile changes also. I just thought what he said was interesting.

This really depends on use. City driving, highway, off road etc. A good way to get a ligit understanding of how long your oil will last you is an oil analysis.
I drive a diesel, and to be honest, too lazy/lack of care to investigate further…. I change the oil every 5k because it’s a well rounded number. The oil life guage is usually around 40% remaining at this time…. I rotate the tires on this mark, and it lines up with all of the other maintenance intervals- differentials, trans, air filters etc.
What he said

My first oil change would be around 3500-4000 miles.
Then every 5000 miles or 5 months whichever comes earlier. Oil life remaining usually shows 50-55% in that schedule.

I am old school, used to do initial change at 1000, then interval of 3000. These were plain Dino then semisynthetic required engines. The JT and wife’s Nissan Rouge Sport use the same 0w20 full synthetic oil , changed at 1000 initially, then at 5000 intervals with tire rotation. I check and change engine and cabin air filters and wiper blades as necessary.
Do to HOA rules the oil changes are done at either a trusted Dealer, (30 minute drive , past 3 other dealers or independent garage that I retired from as senior service advisor).

I'm pretty sure they can, at most, prohibit oil changes on the property - but they can't say who you take it to or even if you do it yourself away from the HOA.

This is reason 27,456,942 why I will never, ever buy in an HOA and no one else should either. Despite what they claim, they don't improve property values.

Amen. My son lives in one of those "communities". Sure, it's secure, but he has so many rules he has to abide by - crap, he can't even change the plants in front of his house without getting permission. If he wanted to swap out petunias and plant ivy instead, he's got to submit a plan and get permission. Even changing the type of mulch requires planning. When he mows, he must make sure there's not a trace of grass on the sidewalk and it has to be edged on a regular basis. No working on cars on his property.

I used to live in a town where they wouldn't even let me park my trailer in my driveway for more than a couple of days - screw that crap. I told my wife I will never accept an HOA and I'm done even living in town.

My cousin lived in one. Her neighbor re-sodded his yard after a freeze and put the plastic garden bed barrier things between his yard and hers to prevent his "new" grass from spreading into her lot. He also reported her every week for still having "dead grass". HOA's can go straight to....

My Grandfather moved into a retirement community HOA in his later years and was a avid woodworker. He brought all his woodworking equipment and setup shop in his new garage and ran afoul of the HOA right off the bat. They basically had a rule that the Garage door could be open only for the amount of time to pull out or in a car or other objects. Exception was made if the homeowner installed (HOA approved) sliding screen panels and the Garage door could be left open with the screen panels closed and nobody from the road could see what was inside the Garage.

The few times I visited him and in talking with him and a few of his neighbors, they liked that conformity aspect of everybody's house pretty much being nondescript from each other.

I thought it was weird and was like driving through the fake nice neighborhood of the old TV show "Leave it To Beaver" or similar.

how often does everyone change their miles , I thought synthetic was good for 7k miles ?

Personally on my Gladiator I do every 4 months which is about 2K miles for me… my wife’s GC with the 3.6 is every 4 months @ around 4K.
If you talk to mechanics that replace engines, the ones that fail are the people doing extended OCI’s…
“DONT FOLLOW YOUR GUAGE CLUSTER”
Now if your doing mostly highway or driving for more than 30 minutes (not stop/go) you can get away with say every 5-6K but most people do some sort of stop/go driving which along with short trips are the worst for any engine… I run Amsoil 0W20 SS in my gladiator and Mobil 1 in my wife’s.
The Pentastar engine doesn’t do well with long OCI’s… (but this is my 2 cents)
Happy wrenching!!

For me it would be more like something from the Twilight Zone, warning of how things get with humans and we must all comply and we must all be exactly the same. Different is not acceptable.

My thinking on such a HOA - we still have the right to not LOOK at something, turn away from something we don't like or deem offensive.
