So I don't put many miles on it, how many months if I have not hit the mileage for an oil change how long in months before I should do one anyway? I believe at one point it was x months or y miles. Is that still a thing?

10,000 miles or 12 months, according to my 2024 owner's manual.

I changed mine at 500 miles, and I'm at 4100 miles right now. I'm chomping at the bit to change it again. I've been pondering using 5w30 for this change.

The new 10k oil change interval is just a bad idea no matter what manufacturers claim about it
Agreed, I was just giving the maximum intervals recommended by the manufacturer. It sounds like OP is more concerned with the time interval anyways.

I changed my oil on my new '24 out at a record-low miles for me: 1500. It had sat on the lot for ~8 months before I got it so I timed out instead of by miles.

8 months on the lot is crazy but gladiator demand is very low atm. The easiest thing now is just whenever the car tells you it's time for maintenance.

- Introduction to section 1.5 in

and this post:
- First section under Important Reminders in Key Info (for guidance on oil filter and oil change indicator system)

IMO today’s oils are good, really good.
That said, it’s my understanding that time/exposure to air & contamination can have as much effect on mileage.

Where you live may impact as much as an impact as towing. IE: Hot and humid weather.

I change the oil in my cars every Spring and Fall if mileage isn’t reached.
It’s simple and in the scheme of things, does not cost that much.

Hot and humid here in Tennessee, plus lots of short trips. My commute is 7 miles each way, and everything in town is within two miles of the house. It takes me a lot of little trips to add up to 5000 miles.

Having owned a large variety of cars, trucks, grain trucks, tractors, classic cars, antiques and more - my rule for the classics that don't see the book's recommended 7500 per change - they get new oil every year, end of the season, so they don't sit over winter with all that acid in the pan.
My other stuff - at least once a year, or miles if I hit enough miles.

Back in the 1970s, the recommendation with the old oils of those days, and old-time chemistry and carbureted engines with a lot of fuel contamination and so on was 7500 miles or 12 months.
These days it's generally 10,000 or 1 year.

I used to do every other year on my classic, less than 1,000 miles a year typically. I switched to the every year plan because it was just easier to track.

Yeah - oil change prior to winter shut down. Easy to remember and you start fresh with clean oil in the spring.
