Seriously the app sucks.

a week ago I reminded myself, while out on a popular trail and no cell phone service/ in and out of airplane mode. I opened up my onX app, that I paid the $30 bucks for, and had a blank screen on my iPhone 13 pro max and nothing on my CarPlay.

I sent an email to onX explaining what I saw and ran across. really honestly, semi slow to reply and asked basic tech questions” did you have the latest app update, when was the last time you updated the maps… Ummm …yeah I did. Hell I’ve even reset my phone.

fast forward to today… I made sure to have the latest app update from the store, I updated all my saved offline maps.

I drove through an area that has no cell phone signals to where the”offline” maps are supposedly to work. And…opened the app… and nothing! Frick!!! Why!!!! No !!! Map!!!! If you watch all the “YouTubers” that promote the crap out of this app… you think it’s the save all app no matter where your at in the USA.

I find it a crap app. I’m including the snapshots of where I was without “cell signal” and what I saw. Oh and google offline maps… work perfectly and they are free!
Again imo

ps… I do a lot of travel that requires being in out of cell service … I just don’t understand why our cell phones have to be connected all the time for apps to work. I’m looking at you Apple Music. I had to downloaded my entire library a freakish way just to have my own bought music to play while in a “offline” situation…Apple really doesn’t care either fyi. And neither does the cell phone carriers… that’s why they just pocket your money and not build infrastructure.

I couldn’t figure out the appeal of onX. I prefer and use Gaia - I downloaded maps for Death Valley and it worked fine in areas that definitely had no reception.
That will be my next mapping system I’ll try. I hear that it works well in an offline situation.

OnX is a bit finicky in carplay/offline. The first time I took it out I had issues and ended up wasting a trip with the family. I got home and downloaded the map near my house and then turned off the cellular/wifi connecting on my phone to go "Offline". I figured out how to view the map, add waypoints, ect... at the house when I wasn't actually offline. When I go to the trails now I pull OnX up while I'm still in cellular service so the map is up and works, and then "Drive into" the area with no cell service.

I've got Gaia and AllTrails too, honestly kept OnX because of the free 6 months when I bought the Jeep and saved a bunch of waypoints/trails in it in those first 6 months, so I reupped with OnX because I didn't want to lose those. I haven't given Gaia and AllTrails a fair shot to know how they compare completely, but I have "gotten use to" OnX...

The Navigation built into the uConnect system works pretty well too, even when offroad...

I paid for both Gaia and Onx this past year.

Onx sucks. Literally the only plus is the descriptions of the trail difficulty. But I've already researched that before I get to the trail so it doesn't do me any good. For everything else I find Gaia to be far better.

Another vote for Gaia and I have used them all. I have the entire state of Washington downloaded (Topo Overland Map) so even if I go off my planned area, I still have offline maps downloaded.

Another plug for Gaia. I have the entire state downloaded and it works perfectly offline every time.

I trail run with a buddy who prefers onX, primarily for specific hunting overlays. Not a factor for me right now.

I used Gaia last year in Colorado, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. It's particularly nice for national parks since you have the Nat Geo overlays. I'm trying out OnX right now. I paid for the subscription, but haven't actually gone anywhere with it, yet. So far, I prefer the search function in OnX, but I haven't used it for actual guidance, yet. But those Nat Geo maps in Gaia are awesome.

I’ve had similar issues and opened a ticket. Their solution was that I reinstall the app. Which I did, it solved the issue for me until next time I guess.

the app Is fairly New so it’s not fair to compare it to Gaia but this is frustrating for sure. I also may give Gaia a try if they don’t iron things out by the end of my Jeep waive subscription.

I tried OnX and found it very redicoulous to interpret the information...Also, there are thousands of trails in the NJ Pinelands, google-maps has almost all of them, OnX has ZERO.

I'm in the "it is a useless app" camp.

Not sure if Gaia is any better or not in this regard.

ON X works if you have the phone open on carplay and unlocked. It wont work in the background no matter what I do.

Last month I downloaded a bunch of maps for Lassen NF and OnX worked exactly as expected. I set my offline maps up with the web interface and then pull them into my Pixel 6 Pro and iPhone Max Pro. I have to set the iPhone to never turn off the screen, though.

I also have Gaia, horrible interface and missing data in OnX, so you takes your chances I guess? Dirt cheap, regardless, I still can't bear to throw away BLM maps I spent hundreds of dollars on 20 years ago.
