Hi steffen707,
We have checked with our internal resources and after conducting additional testing, Jeep engineering has confirmed that up to 500 lbs payload can be carried in the bed with the tailgate in the mid position. This payload rating is dependent on the sheet cargo being properly supported with 2x4s positioned in the bed as specified by the owner's manual. Future printings of the owner's manual will show the new 500 lbs payload. I hope this offers some clarification!

I don't know why all the fuss about fitting a full sheet (4x8) of plywood into a Gladiatotr - after all it's a "lifestyle vehicle" not a pickup truck.... So you can haul a couple of motor bikes or kayaks....UGH!

Build the J6!!!!

@JAY, IT ISN'T BEDTIME YET!

You stated in the most recent, news flash, https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/plywood-question-put-to-bed-yes-they-fit-flat-in-the-gladiator/ that "P.S. in case you didn’t know — setting the Gladiator’s three-position tailgate on the middle setting matches the top of the tailgate up with the tops of the rear wheel housing and enables the Gladiator to carry 20 sheets of 4×8 plywood or drywall flat; this is according to Jeep."

Well the JT manual says we can only put 300lbs weight on the tailgate at half position. So we still have a possible bed problem!

Even 1/4" plywood weighs about 22 lbs per sheet, at 19 sheets that's, 418lbs......hey @JeepCares , which is it, 418lbs or 300lbs? Is Engineering right, or is Marketing right? Or did Marketing not take the engineer's numbers correctly?

i'll post the manual in a sec. https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/gladiator-owners-manual-download-in-pdf.15679/

LMAO, this thread has had 18,000 views. AWESOME! Wonder how many dealers are baffled with all the questions on plywood.

JUST SWAMPED WITH PLYWOOD QUESTIONS!

So is it 500# total payload with the mid gate position, or 500# on the tailgate, assuming the load is spread across the 3 supports (2Ă—4s and gate) as directed?

i believe 500 just on the tailgate, so if its evenly distrbuted on all 3 laterals, like 1500lb payload....i think.

It is all above my pay bracket... I believe...
I posted my comments... because I thought... and thinking can be a dangerous thing...

Hang in there... As for me... I have not been aware of the plywood story... other than fun...

I posted a photo, with the Jeep crate... full of original shocks and springs... I think this is where I chimed in...

Don't know nothing more... not a thought... ;)

Been tryin to figure where they were merging all my posts...

Figured it out... Fairy Lake Test... Rings a bell... Owner updates and musings... normal thread...

Good to know I am normal... Thought I was the Mountain mad man...

Thanks, administrators...

forgot to also mention at some point @Bobs85Reny started making hella topper concepts:surprised:and also many of us enjoyed the 5337 flexing some JT prowess at KOH :jk:.

Yes that last comment was left kind of vague, you can figure it out pretty quickly.

I guess this is really a tale of the last year of this forum (not just plywood)..............TRIBUTE.

And the peculiar thing is this, my friends:
The tale of the Gladiator didn't actually happen anyway like my tale.

This is just a tribute! You gotta believe it! And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.

Ah, f*ck! Good God, God lovin', So surprised to find you can't stop it. A fiery ring of fire, Rich motherf*cker
Alright! Alright!

720 POUNDS OF PLYWOOD :muscle::whew:!!!

I put the tailgate to the test today, and tried out some rough science to understand the weight distribution with the mid-tailgate. Here are my findings:
  • 12 sheets of 3/4" ply @ 60lbs each = 720lbs
  • I jacked the sheets up and lowered them on a scale just at the point where the sheets weren't touching the tailgate. There was 260lbs at the tailgate. There were previous posts eluding to the likely even weight distribution across all three load points, and I think this confirms that. In my scenario 36% of the weight was resting on the tailgate.
In summary, I was extremely nervous on the drive home, but all is good! The suspension and brakes felt great almost as if the bed was empty.

This is awesome! Love the scale idea. What were you nervous about? That the tailgate might break?

I'm pretty sure you can haul Plywood as the wheel arches are flat up to the fuel bump out. So you can't push the Plywood all the way to the front of the bed, so what, It's going to hang out the back of the 5 foot bed anyhow, what's a few inches? Let's be realistic, you're gonna buy one anyhow, or you wouldn't be on this forum. I'm sure 4 of 5 inches is not going to suddenly make you go out and by a Ram 3500.
