2020 JT SS Max Tow 2005 WK Hemi
Hello! Here I will post a project build and the adventures of my Firecracker Red 2020 JT Max Tow.

I bought this JT in October of 2019 and it is my 11th Jeep. I’ve had built rock crawlers (one of my favorites was a Comanche on 38’s) and the camping rigs (all of my GC’s and XJ’s)... pre Over-landing of course. I’ve also owned the coveted CJ-8, ZJ 5.9, and currently still own a 2005 WJ 5.7 Hemi Limited with 3” OME lift.

My plan with this JT is to make an overlander to moderate trail rig out of it. My previous Jeep was a 2016 JKUHR. I will discuss and show some of my past Jeeps as I progress with my JT build.

In the spur of a moment I bought my JT in Columbia, TN. After a test drive and a sweet price. I was completely hooked on the JT and honestly i knew i would be. They had a Red Max Tow JT with cold weather package, upgraded 7” screen with sub stereo, side steps (not my favorite but they will work for now), all of the Max Tow goodness, tinted front windows, black hard top and ceramic coated paint. After some wheeling and dealing, they really wanted the JKUHR for a trade, we worked out the best deal I found at that time. I did look previously at dealership’s inventories of JT’s and had three written offers before buying my JT.

Right now I am just getting used to what owning a JT means. I spent the last 6 months trying to figure out how I could safely carry my mountain bikes without having them mounted way up on a roof rack, hanging off the tailgate, on a receiver mounted bike rack or in the bed with the tailgate down. One member here already suffered a Mntn bike loss in a rear end collision. I wanted to carry a Yakima Spacecase, two Kayaks, up to 4 bikes, dry storage in bed with drawer system, and eventually a rooftop tent. I priced out what was available and what I saw wasn’t what i wanted. I know the market will catch up, but back orders and what I was wanted lead me to make my own setup for now.

After a 2000 mile round trip to the UP of Michigan, I can say this setup is awesome! I don’t have the drawers made yet, that is my next project.

So phase one is this rack and storage setup. Stage two will be a 2.5” to 3”lift, 35’s with the 4:10’s or since I’m going with ARB lockers, may go 37’s with 4:88’s or 5:13’s. Need to think on that for a bit. Wheels will be 17x8.5 hard rock style aftermarket (Jeeps stock Rubicon rims are only 7.5”s wide, I want to run a 12:50 aspect tire). Lockers will be ARB’s with a compressor and tank of some sort. The front swaybar will be Currie anti-rok or Off-road Only’s Sway-Loc. The fenders will get the Rugged Ridge fender chop DRL’s. Inner fender liners and top it off with Jeep LED tail lights, Jeep or Morimoto LED headlights, Amber LED Fog lights in a short style front bumper. Winch will be Warn.

Here are some pictures of my storage setup so far.

Yes Baba Yaga is a scary beast, but the name is from my favorite series of movies... John Wick.

Here are a few pics with my new Specialized 2019 Stumpy 29’er FSR ST on the bed cover mount. This keeps it well protected and i can still load stuff up top forward of the three bike mounts. I love this bike!

Now, I can swap out for longer Yakima bars that I have to allow two bikes to go behind the last ladder bar above the tailgate.

Next up is a RTT, and I will mount this on a slider from the passenger side, with two drop down legs on the outside edge of RTT platform. I have one shot to make my wife love the RTT, and it has to be lower to the ground. This set up will allow for the RTT Spacecase, 2 kayaks and 2 bikes, tailgate still up and nothing sticking way behind the JT on a trailer hitch mounted bike rack.

I also added the full length sunshade from Spider Shades. I really like it but a bit concerned about constantly stretching the Spider Shade to remove and replace the freedom panels. I had the alien shade on my JKUHR, and it had plenty of room to remove panels and flip soft top back without stretching the alien shade.

Here are a few pics from the JT’s trip
Up to the UP of Michigan from TN. I put about 2000 miles on Baba Yaga, averaged around 18MPG according to the JT. I had a full bed of gear, the Spacecase was loaded with dirt bike and mountain bike gear, all of my camping gear including 10 person quick deploy tent, awning poles, and my Ski’s gear. I had three bikes mounted , 3 people in the cab with lots of room as all gear was outside of the cab. I towed my ‘98 Kawasaki 1100ZXi which weighs about 1000 lbs with the trailer. The truck didn't know what was loaded and cruised the speed limit easily on any hills, Michigan has about 300 miles of 75 MPH speed limit below the Bridge to the UP. I never had issue with passing trucks or cars and I could have easily cruised at above speed limit. Ride was smooth and comfortable and my girls are very picky! I hit some serious wind and rain on the trip up and back and the truck handles it with no issues.

My all time favorite movie series is John Wick. The first John Wick IMOP is perfect I’ve honestly watched it over 50 times... I rarely watch a movie twice.

So the Baba Yaga in that movie refers to Russian folklore. Baba Yaga is a witch in the woods of Russia, which some refer to as the boogeyman here in the states. A bit lost in translation, but this is the Baba Yaga I am thinking about...

Bought a new used truck rack ($125) to build on. Will start in the fall. I need to find a windshield hoop like many overland racks have. With this new rack the front hoop will be supported by bed rack and front hoop only. This will allow for freedom panel removal and for a soft top I am purchasing next year if Best top will make one that folds all the way down to the bed. The windshield hoop needs to allow for snorkel, cowl standing platform and grab handles.

This rack is from a full size truck and will enable me to sleeve and adjust to exactly the size I need. The cross bars are removable in the bed using quick release pins. This allows for different configurations. I am still going with hard cover with bike mounts and a drawer system.

Next up are Rubicon hood vents cut in to the stock sport hood (more ventilation) rear tailgate black center blackout sticker, high line fenders with DRL’s and a taser.

Below are hood vent and tailgate center black out.

One more of the MJ Wheeling hard and a single shot of my 1st built ZJ on 35’s 4.5” lift, 231 t-case, V-8, sliders etc. kept this one hit only a few months, then found the 5.9L unicorn ZJ ‘98. I swapped most parts over to the 5.9L GC and was in process of ultimate build. Unfortunately I had a pass front hub fail that took me over a drop on the side of the road. I was able to repair and get the next owner on the road to home in about 2 hours after selling it. Would still have that one if the accident hadn’t happened. I scared myself at that point because 15 min. before it took me off the side of a country road (the entire front wheel and hub ripped off of the jeep)I was running about 90 MPH on the interstate. My wife said no more Jeeps... took me 5 years to pick the next Jeep up.

I added one shot of my FJ 80 with 4.5 OME 5:13 gears and 38’s I thew on from my MJ to see what it looked like. Would need some trimming, but this truck is a beast and still a favorite.
