Jaw-dropping photos show how close a family sleeping in a tent on top of their Toyota HiLux came from being crushed to death by a falling tree
  • Campers have had a lucky escape when a huge tree crushed their Toyota HiLux
  • A large tree fell onto the middle of the HiLux and completely crushed the cab
  • No one was hurt in the incident despite sleeping on top of the ute
A family sleeping in a rooftop tent on top of their Toyota HiLux came within inches of being crushed to death by a falling tree during a camping trip.

Dramatic photographs shared online showed how the gum tree almost sliced straight through the centre of the utility vehicle, crushing the roof and seats.

The photo was shared to a Facebook page for 4WD enthusiasts in Queensland, but it's understood the tree fell at a camping ground in Goulburn, south-west of Sydney.

Campers had a lucky escape after a massive tree full onto and crushed the Toyota HiLux they were sleeping in (pictured)

Concerned campers said the near-death incident was a good reminder not to park underneath big or old trees - which are more likely to fall over on windy nights.

'Growing around the Goulburn River we knew em (sic) as widow makers,' one person said.

'Don't camp under them big widow makers, thought everyone knew that,' another added.

'They probably could have driven that home. Unbreakable Hilux...' wrote a third.

Others found some humour out of the situation once it was clear no one was hurt.

'I love how they're looking under the bonnet as if to say 'Yeah I think we can get this going again'' one person joked.

'At least they have plenty of firewood,' another added.

Thankfully the tree missed the tend on the top of the ute's tray but it completely crushed the cab (pictured)

Wow, lucky campers! Good thing they were sleeping in a RTT and not in a ground tent beside their vehicle. ;)

Side note, not the fault if the rtt or the ute.

Still yikes.

Neither the truck nor the RTT decided to park under those widow makers (trees).

i don't think that'll buff right out. I possibly see a new Gladiator in their future since they are just hitting Oz.

Reviewing this, on the bright side the tray and canopy look to have survived as well as the suspension and the roo bar so once they get a new one it shouldn't be too hard to rebuild.
