I could speculate blindly but I'm curious what others know/think - What makes the Gladiator substantially heavier than competition in the segment?

Official weight for a Rubicon is 5050lbs base without options. Comparatively the most commonly cited competitor the Tacoma TRD Pro weighs in at a comparably svelte 4465lbs. Given broadly similar dimensions and payload/towing capacities, wherein lies the difference?

Clearly the SFA of the gladiator adds a chunk compared to IFS as does the steel vs composite bed but those factors alone would not seem to amount to the sum of 560lbs. Across the board, among other competing makes, the Jeep appears to have a few hundred pounds over equitable trims from Chevy, Ford, Nissan. The Jeep comes closer to the full size segment.

In addition to the aforementioned factors the Jeep rides on a Ram 1500 frame but frames these days are quite light. Convertibles are typically heavier than standard roofs, but I would expect a soft top to negate some of the difference.

What else could account for the weight?
