But you can go faster in the Mojave in 4 wheel

I'm sure you can. I just haven't been able to test that, because I have no usage case for going fast in 4WD, only going really slow, or getting through snow. But that's really the main difference between the two. Most everything else is identical. Mojave front suspension allows you to go faster off-road without beating yourself or the truck up too bad. Top speed is exactly the same in 4Hi, because it's geared the same in High, and governed the same. But it'd probably be pretty jarring in a Rubicon in the dunes as compared to the Mojave. The Mojave isn't "faster" from a pure acceleration standpoint. It's faster in the dunes because the front suspension setup is quite nicely built for it. If you're blasting dunes where you need to go fast in 4 hi, Mojave is the way to go.

This definitely helps, thank you! I’m having a hard time tracking down a Mojave on lot, but I think one dealership near me is getting one in next week, so hopefully i can do the same driving comparison. What kind of MPG’s were you getting stock on your Mojave? I’ve heard that MPG are comparable between the two, but then have seen some less than flattering numbers for both. It’s such a subjective thing, especially since we all drive differently, but I’m certainly curious.
It sounds like I have a heavier foot, but I average about 16mpg between town/highway and averaged about 11.5 towing my camper.

Dirk is on right track
I bought sport max tow
Got axles and limited slip as Rubi
It gets better mileage with 245 vs.285
Brake assist wired for trailer camera
Wasn’t worried about ride upgraded suspension same week as bought it

kicker for me $6000 les than rubi or Mohave

Thanks for the article. It mentions that the Mojave comes with the max tow package standard, is that not the same for the Rubicon?
Neither have the "Max tow package" as that is reserved for a specific trim. Both have a towing package. Rubicon has 7000lb towing capacity, vs Mojave 6000.

But you can go faster in the Mojave in 4 wheel high ?
No, only in 4wd low.

And if you aren’t worried about the Mojave being 1” wider than Rubi, that improves handling and ride quality as a daily driver.
The width comes from the wheels.

I just turned 10k on my Mojave, at least 25% of those miles were off-pave. I live in northern NewMexico @ 7600’, mountains to my east, desert west. Coming from a dirt bike background, what impressed me with the Mojave is the suspension integration, it’s not just good shocks, Fox hydraulic front bump-stops, (like having another set of shocks), Fox springs, not just painted grey but tuned for the above, reinforced shock mounts. It is rare to find a vehicle, 2 or 4 wheeled, stock from the factory where the suspension is truly a well tuned system.

I think Mojave comes with the upgraded cooling fan, since It's desert rated, but Rubicon only gets it if you add the towing package. That's probably what motortrend was referring to.

Wrong. You want to pay the extra $600 for the trailer tow package for the Mojave. Not sure about the Rubi.

Here are a few reasons why I would chose the Mojave.

  • Love the Hood
  • Love driving fast on dirt roads
  • Reinforced frame
  • High strength steering knuckles (Cast steel vs Aluminum)
  • Heaver front axle tubes – hmm these might be the same at +10mm tube, don’t remember off the top of my head
  • Can use the rear locker in high range (Can add a ARB in the front down the road)
  • Already lifted a bit

Same axles for Rubicon and Mojave (and Max Tow), and can use 4hi rear locker on both Rubicon and Mojave.

Cast iron, not cast steel, same axle thickness, both can use rear locker in high, both are lifted a bit, mojave is a bit taller in front but same height in the rear.

It's amazing how the same information gets rehashed page after page.

Both require a tow package for the receiver.

We get out of Texas a few times a year, specifically New Mexico and Colorado, but most of our in state camping is in West Texas (Big Bend area). We are near San Antonio and Austin, so spend most of the driving in city and country roads.
Having been to Big Bend Ranch State Park a few times, I'd get the Mojave just for the road from pavement to the Ranger station. That road is brutal. :)

The Rubicon will do every thing the Mojave will do and much more. If your pocket book allows - buy the Rubicon.
