After finding little real info on this, I decided I should throw this on here for someone searching.
Now hold on a minute!! Yes I did mention Max Tow and the reason being is wide axle No Lift info. So mentioned for specificity… why this mention of Max Tow makes so many lose it is just idiotic. Seriously… there are threads on JT specific colors! Come on , how does that have anything to do with ability of the JT? I am glad people are proud of their Gator colors etc… I digress.
THEPOINT AT HAND: 37’s Sport S Max Tow with about (guessing here) 300lbs in the bed … tools, camping gear, bike stuff, and cover/rack set up currently.
only mod that helps “No Lift and 37’s is the is AAL fender chop although I retained my fender liners (pics and write up in my build thread)
so after ordering a lift (3.5 “ Rubicon Express Sport with Mono Shocks but may change too different shock.) I was faced with back order delay and shop work delay… so that happens end of October.
the Max Tow is now no longer a DD, so that changes things for me. I want it set for overlanding trips and my other outdoor activities. Still needs to travel distances in comfort.
So to the point.
I HAD DISCOUNT TIRE THROW ON THE BFG AT KOs 37x12.50x17 on stock 17x7.5 Wrangler Rubicon Rims (still my favorite).
My usual sales guy, very knowledgeable located in Lebanon TN, his name is Kendall. He said that they could put a 37x12.50x17 on at the shop and on the JT but if I ordered a 35x12.50x17 they could mint them but not put them on the JT because of the taller 37 it fit specs for the 7.5 rim width. Interesting as I didn’t know that. I quickly told Kendall that I had no lift and the Sport S Max Tow (he knows his vehicles, all of them it seems) and he replied easily, that is no problem as they will fit and not rub with my front fender chop. Really…
So Kendall was absolutely right. No rub lock to lock, hit some mild off road on a friends farm, towed about 4000 lbs, have driven about 300 miles with the 37’s and no lift. There was never a rub, nothing in control arms or fenders.
I know off road with some serious flex might cause fender flare spontaneous combustion! But, daily use was fine… seriously.
So woth the wider axles fit is no issue.
The drive: really it does well and 1st gear as low as it is with the automatic, had the Jeep really scoot off of the line. Usually even with the 33 stock Ruby ATs 1st and 2nd gear are mostly skipped by with the 8 speed auto.
fuel mileage as calculated by hand and mind was avg 18mpg down from 20-21 mpg on the stocker 245’s , up from the 285’s the 4:10’s seem to like the BFG in 37 form.
The ride is noticeably smoother and very quiet (BFG AT KO2s are awesome!).
towing 4000lbs is fine in the flats and some simple climbs. The auto does down shift more gears but maintains speed easily… seriously the JT seems faster.
I’m getting ready to head out on a 1000+ round trip so will let you know how it does.
I know the Max Tow with the wider axles and the 4:10’s make the 37’s very doable on stock suspension less those fender wings if you have them.
Pleasantly surprised!
I just got my Tazer Mini, so will also let you know how that does.
still I look forward to next phase of build which will see the lift, lockers, gears, reconfigure bed set up, and add a RTT for my hiking biking trip convenience.
ive added one pic of the new DD… Kendell at Discount Tire took one look at the DDs current 22 inch wheels and 245x30x22 and said “Chinese cheap ass wrong weight specs and width (do not protect rim) that won’t work”… see I told you he knows all cars and tires that work!
so ordered proper (for me) Grand Touring (it is a Mustang 2013 GT 6 speed manual convertible with the 5.0 V8) 20 x 10, 5 spoke wheels squared, with 265x45 x20 Michelin HP all season tires.
oh yes those are real hood vents, completely stock Mustang GT less the stereo upgrades and wheels/tires.
