This won’t be a permanent install, at least not at the moment. I went with the Gen 3 over the mini because I’ll also be using it for backup internet if and when my home internet goes out. I’m putting it in the jeep for those times we venture out of cell phone range. Powered off starlinks own (new) 12v adapter. The bar that holds it up is a variation of a gun rack someone posted on this forum a while back. It works through the hard top and coverking (no sound/foil insulation) while in motion. Just wanted to show that it is an option for those interested.

Very cool. I bought a mini but haven't used it- yet.

I understand they generate a fair amount of heat, is that true?

I can feel some if I put my hand near it on the underside but it’s not enough to where I need to crank the AC to keep the interior cool. Now I want to check it with a temp gun lol

Now I'm really intrigued!

The power draw from the full size units is higher than the mini and from what I gather the panel is designed to get and stay warm to prevent snow/ice accumulation.

Snow melt feature, from what I gather, uses up/down link metrics and If it senses some decreased performance it assumes snow anccum is causing it (or other things like heavy rain) and increases transmit power which increases surface heat and melts the snow. It can be disabled but I left it on auto during my in-motion testing. I should try it with the melt feature turned off to see what performance and temps look like compared to when it’s on auto.

I’m planning to add a solar panel or some sort to keep the battery from dying if I ever use it with the engine off for extended periods.

Sorry...dumb question but the pic shows the SL in storage mode yes? You cannot "see" throught the roof to get a signal can you?

It can be used in its location, it works perfectly though the hardtop.

Wow. OK...why do trees hinder receipt of signal if it can receive through the jeep fiberglass hardtop? Thx for letting m ask.

Cool...did not know this... Yes, Starlink can generally see through a fiberglass roof of a car with minimal signal loss, as fiberglass allows most of the satellite signal to pass through with little obstruction; however, the quality of the signal may be affected by the thickness and composition of the fiberglass, and a clear view of the sky is still required for optimal performance.

Thank you OP...learned something today!

My guess is density of the fiberglass vs the trees?
Fiberglass cloth. resin and Styrofoam are fairly transparent to RF through many GHz, not counting any metallic paint on top. Trees and foliage have lots of water inside and that will attenuate RF in the 12-18GHz range that Starlink uses.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this not radiating harmful frequency waves in a very close proximity to your head?

No, the radiation emitted by starlink is non-ionizing, ie does not damage tissue inherently.

The biggest threat from any RF would be tissue heating due to the way the RF waves interact with the water in your tissues, but the low power of the starlink receiver and the relative size of the interior of the JT means your exposure will be tens to hundreds of times lower than the maximum recommended exposure.

Starlink documents say 13” distance and I’m gonna assume that’s from the front of the dish as I’m almost positive (keep in mind I know nothing about this tech lol) that it is a directional antenna array with almost all of the signal being transmitted up through the hardtop and not back to the rear of the dish.
