Has anyone come up with a clever way for the camera to work while the tailgate is down that continues to use the OEM backup camera active guidelines. When its down, all I see is the license plate and the buzzer going off. I don't want to resort to a 3rd party camera for this, maybe possibly a removable/detachable OEM camera, I or mounting the camera on the truck rack ETC. (thinking out loud here)

I think most people relocate the camera. There's a bunch of kits and brackets out there.

Yes I know about the kits that are out there I was hoping someone had actually used one and dealt with the cable length etc, and particularly what they plugged the tailgate hole with so I don't reinvent the wheel. but I don't mind doing that either

Have you thought about moving it to the bumper? Could be the thing, or above the bumper below tailgate.
I'd look at mine to see but it's in shop. . . Repair hail damage. So driving my Wrangler Unlimited till unknown day.

You don't have to reinvent the wheel when there are already kits out there.

The only problem with this is when backing the reverse lights can wash out the picture significantly in the dark. I tried it with the Wolfbox and it was a definite no-go. If you can relocate to the rear of the cab it may work the way you want but on the license plate frame I don’t recommend.

Tazer is supposed to fix that issue but it usually doesn't but there are other fixes for it:

How much backing up with the tailgate down are you doing? I'm a fan of back up cameras, but certainly remember how to drive without one. And the picture for reference doesn't even have anything sitting on the tailgate preventing you from simply closing it if you can't back up without the camera. I can only think of twice in 3 years that I've backed up with the tailgate down (because there were long boards sticking out the back) and never for a second thought I should spend a bunch of effort and some money instead of just looking over my shoulder?

Wasn’t aware Tazer did that. I just moved the Wolfbox to the top of my bed cap hatch. Works much better there as a rearview “mirror” anyway. Provides a clear picture of the idiots on their phone who will rear end me one fine day.

Seeing nothing but my registration has saved me from driving off with my gate down on more than one occasion. On the rare occasions I need to have the tailgate down while reversing I use my mirrors and my neck, you know, the way we reversed for over 100 years?

Well put and I agree and that's how i approach these kind of problems. Less is better. Seemed like there's a cheap easy solution to the alarm annoyance. The picture doesn't show the bed extender that I use in order to be able to get all my camping gear under the tonneau cover. I keep most of the gear there since I camp so often. (retirement has its perks even if the neck has creaks in it) The main issue is the alarm I get as I have to back up a long drive uphill that has obstacles and a sharp turn at the end. The Tazer is no-go due to cost for that one little thing. (even if it worked) I'm more interested in someone's experience to a silly problem there's already a solution for. Maybe Ill learn something I overlooked. I'd make my own 'kit'. Not paying $100 for one.

Is the alarm the backup/park sensors?
I take it the Gladiator doesn't have a button to shut them off.
Does hooking a trailer up shut them off? I don't have that feature.
The Ram we had had a button and I believe hooking up to a trailer through the 7pin connector also shut the sensors off.

That's interesting. I dont trailer but maybe theres a jumper I could put on the 7 pin for it.
