After a cold icy winter I finally am able to periodically ride around sans the freedom panels.

I rode around last fall with out them a few time. Back roads and trails. Slow and just enjoying the top front off and all Windows down, back window open. Never noticed any change in MPG.

Now, first couple times out with freedom panels off we have been on the interstate. What I did not expect, straight line at 65 mph on level I get 30-32 mpg instantaneous reading. With panels on its only 26-27 mpg.

This goes totally against my logic. Wouldn't the rear part of
The roof, even with the little window open, act as a kind off parachute? Evidently not.

Hopefully when doors and full top of it may be similar results. Not really important either way. Just a observation I did not expect.

FYI. Auto 35" x 12.5" x 17" BFG KO2. T/A, JTR with leveling kit. Not far off stock condition.

Yeah that was instantaneous mileage. Going uphill and such and stop and go, bring average back still to 18-20 MPG. Still that is acceptable to me. I just was surprised that I got a few extra MPG instantaneous reading on level highway with freedom panels off. My average probably didn't change much, I don't ride around on the interstate that often with the freedom panels off.

Obviously you didn't read the part, on level highway. It maintains 30-32 mpg, freedoms off. The same with them on is 26-27 mpg.

...noob

I wonder if you are subconsciously driving slightly slower because of the wind effect? I know I do...

65 mph top off is same as 65 top on.

Look... I was stating an observation. I did not expect.

You get worse gas mileage? I would think I would, but mine is better. Why? Mystery to me.

I have same ride home every day. 3 rides home with Freedom panels off on same stretch of I-95 for a few miles. Reads 30 - 32 mpg on the flat.

3 rides home with Freedom panels on, same place same speed 26-27 mph. Does not seem logical.

As said, an unexpected observation.

Just wondering if that occurs for any others?
Or is my JTR a Unicorn?

If so... got lucky on this one.

No steering issue
No automatic transmission issue
No 12 mpg issue
No creaky issues
No non LED headlight issue
No feeling under powered 3.6 engine issues
No windshield cracking issues

Only issue is, it's too cold and rainy to go topless more often.

What engine?
Has to be the diesel because 30+ mpg on 35s in the gas engine has got to be impossible unless it’s downhill (or some major tuning work is done).

I’ve seen my instant mpg number hold 30-32 for a few stretches of flat road at 60-65 mph but I’m on the stock 32s.
