Finally had a chance to get my tailgate badge from @Urban Jeep Outfitters installed. Bought it on Black Friday so it's been too cold.
Install was pretty easy with their included template. With that being said this is a rough job for anyone who is remotely OCD. I measured and remeasured more times than I care to count.
First step is to remove the Jeep letters. You get fishing line so removing them is pretty simple. I heated the letters up a bit to make cutting through the adhesive a little easier.
This is what remains.
Next step is to remove all of that junk. It actually rolls off pretty easily. A heat gun again is your friend to make things easier.
PRO TIP: I figured this out while doing the first letter. After you get the bulk of the adhesive off take a ball of the removed adhesive and rub and roll it over and small pieces that remain. Comes off super easy.
Bulk of the adhesive removed. The remainder is just the outline. I used a microfiber cloth with some Goo Gone and followed the outline and it disappeared. Followed that with some Meguiars spray detailer.
Next install the template. It comes in three pieces. The instructions say to tape them together first. I found it easier to put just the center piece on and measure the center and both ends to make sure it's straight. I then lined up each side and taped at the seam. Then I was able to tweak it to get the measurements to match.
I did a mock up with the letters taped in so I could see how it looked and made sure I was happy with the position.
I cleaned the area where the letters go with alcohol and then applied the adhesive promoter. From the time I started until this point the temps dropped substantially so I broke out the heat gun and heated the surface before applying each letter. Halfway through it started to rain. So I had to get undercover.
Here is the final product. Straight to my eye and looks damn good IMO.
While I had the heat gun out I went ahead and removed the Willys 4 Wheel Drive decal on the lower right. Looks cleaner without it.
Unfortunately had a few minor injuries. LOL
Blister from rubbing off the adhesive.
And while rushing to get everything out of the rain I touched the tip of the heat gun to my inner forearm.
