The gold/bronze part in this picture. I imagine they are for heat dissipation, am I right? My guess is that since the rear axles are fully sealed, these provide an avenue to let heat out. The front don't have them, because they aren't sealed.

I may be wrong, but that looks like a tone ring for ABS and speed sensors

Yep, tone ring for the ABS and VDC. The fronts have it too. They're located on the unit bearing, on the steering knuckle. If you look. You should see a wire going into the knuckle.

Was finishing one, and couldn’t figure out what those were. My guess was clearly off! Did it in two stages and must have forgot the front axles had those tone rings on them too.

The tone ring is not on the axle shaft pre say. They're inside the unit bearing.

Those have been on Jeep axles since hector was a pup - clear back to the very first with ABS.
They are pressed onto the axle on most vehicles.

This is a rear axle from a Jeep WJ, circa 2004.
I replaced the bearing and seal on an axle exactly like this one a year ago.
Working down from the top of the picture -
there's the retainer collar,
then the bearing,
then the seal,
then the retainer (square with studs)
and the tone ring is pressed onto the axle shaft.
You remove all that other stuff and the tone ring stays on as it's pressed directly onto the axle just inside the hub.

Ooh, nice. FAD eliminator or regular up front?
After doing my research, I left the FAD in place. The coupler is 300M and the vehicle is designed to have a FAD. Eventually, I’ll do an Axle swap. For now, no need to introduce more variables.

Good call IMHO. Your front axle is trussed anyway, isn’t it? I’d think that would eliminate any issues that wouldn’t break something else bigger anyway.
