Oh no, this guess is much less exciting in the short-term: The JL folks think it's about meeting new fuel economy numbers.

The previous rule required an industry fleet-wide average of 54.5 mpg by the 2025 model year, which was later amended to 46.7 mpg. The final rule is 40.4 mpg.

In the 4th quarter of 1940 (with paper work being prepared in April of 1940)... Thus 40.4...

The U.S. Army asked auto makers to produce a four-wheel-drive reconnaissance vehicle to replace horses and mules. Three prototypes were delivered by Willys-Overland and Ford. The GP ('Jeep') was born.

I know it's a stretch on the 40.4, but there are rumors Jeep is planning to deliver a smaller two seat open top Jeep reminiscent of the original GP.

I know I'll buy one if they do! OR... If I guessed right, Jeep should give me one. lol

By the way... Goodyear produces a 40.4 inch diameter Endurance RSA tire. That's probably the real hidden message.

Or... it's the departure angle!

It would be badass to see factory 40s, but I bet it’s something dumb as shit like 40.4 MPGs with a new Twin Turbo 1.4L pumping out a whopping 150hp.

Jeep was recently spotted testing 35"s. I think that's the ceiling on that front. 40.4° departure with said tires is obscure, but if this was the Bluff the Listener game on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, that seems most like to me so far.
