Well here in Alabama you have 20 days to buy (or robbed) your tag. My tag for the year was 323$ so what is your tag for the new toy cost?

It's kind of a gray area what constitutes "tag" costs since it varies state to state. Technically, I'd consider "tag" costs what is paid to DMV, but other taxes or fees should probably be included. Also depends on if it's a one time fee at purchase, or the annual fee.

Oregon doesn't have sales tax, but they started a "new vehicle privilege tax" of 0.5%. So not officially a sales tax, but also not a DMV fee either. (paid to department of revenue).

Colorado is a huge rip off.
The worst part is the ownership tax only declines slightly every year.
So an additional $1k per year

Yeah it’s pretty ridiculous. I’ve always had vehicles that are 5-10 years old so it hasn’t hurt this much. Makes me rethink a new vehicle.

In 2015 I moved from Colorado to Tennessee for 9 months. Cost at the time to renew my Pilot in Colorado would have been approx $600 on a 2-3 year old car. Registered it in Tennessee, and the cost (I believe) was $63. I asked the clerk if that was just for the license plate and she looked at me like I was stupid.

In TN my personalized tag was $35 and I pay approx $32 for registration annually. I believe I will have to pay the $35 for personalized tag annually as well. We do pay 7% sales tax when we buy the vehicle...

WV is $51.50 per year for renewal. It was raised from $31.50 two years ago.

WTF..... a privilege tax?

Two new Oregon vehicle taxes began January 1, 2018:
  • The vehicle privilege tax is a tax for the privilege of selling vehicles in Oregon.
  • The vehicle use tax applies to vehicles purchased from dealers outside of Oregon that are required to be registered and titled in Oregon.
The privilege of selling vehicles in Oregon - holy shit who the hell do they think they are?

Kinda simple when you think about it. There is no sales tax (which is a significant savings over most states). State wants more money. So they need to call the new tax something. Yeah it sucks they added that new tax. But 0.5% of a $55k vehicle is $275. Still beats most other state taxes/fees. Look at the CO Ownership Tax above that is $1093 (on top of sales tax).

I think I have you all beat!
Maine has what they call an excise tax. Well that excise tax cost me $1493 to register my new diesel for the year. AND they go off sticker, not what you paid for it.
For all that money our roads suck too.
