The JT is my Fuel efficient vehicle. I only drive my HUMMER on Sundays now or any of my other vehicles or motorcycles till the new wears off.
Seriously this I have never understood. Gas prices go down and everybody buys big honking SUVs.
Gas prices go up people will keep the big SUV and buy a second fuel efficient vehicle due to the rise in cost of gas. Monthly payment and additional insurance coverage of fuel efficient vehicle is greater than or equal to the cost of fuel for the SUV they already owned.

Mine is a DD

A smart person would buy something like a Ford Maverick to commute in, but I'm going to buy a Fox body Mustang or something even older as a second vehicle

My wife drives a Land Rover Discovery Sport, does that mean it compliments the JT?

not sure that’s gonna be easily towable
If the op is talking about flat towing, you are right. You cannot flat tow the Lightning.
I thought he was talking about towing with the vehicle, but after re-reading his description, he may be talking about flat towing.

Well back in 95 I bought my first new car. Sold it 26 years later to buy the Gladiator. She(Sally) had 580,000+ miles of drive it like you stole it ridden hard put away wet after 5 trips across the country many girlfriends and one divorce. She never left me stranded. She did blow a gasket in my driveway once. So I have her a heart transplant. Newish motor.
Fast forward to mid last year. Bam SOLITUDE showed up in my driveway courtesy of SLC Jeep. 4581 miles left me stranded going to dinner. (Bitch) But I still love her.
Well the other half of the garage is another box on wheels. 2009 Honda Element 4wd. Which I can say gets shit gas mileage in comparison to my Ecodiesel. The Element has over 100k on it with no issues. That Honda has seen it's share of off-road excursions too. Pushed it probably beyond it's limits. But the suspension never bottoms out. Built like a tank.
Opposite ends of the spectrum.

I have gone back and forth of having a second "commuter" vehicle more than a few times. Unless you buy some clapped out high mileage at dirt cheap prices, any late model vehicle you get once you factor in initial buy in and cost of insurance, it will usually buy you quite a bit of gas in what you are currently driving.

If you drive a crap ton of miles and the math works out, get a hybrid something if MPG's are your thing.
Yeah that’s basically what my quick maths has shown. At this point it’s more for comfort on long road trips and the best fuel economy I can manage.

If you want to tow, and be comfortable - a Grand Cherokee can tow as well as most JT models, and gets much better mileage.
I don’t usually tow long distances. I’m okay with these attributes being mutually exclusive. The XC60 many have recommended looks pretty promising

We picked up a low milage '11 Subaru Legacy for one of my kids and I've found it's a fantastic compliment to the JT...
  • All wheel drive so it's capable in different conditions
  • Get's 28-30 mpg on a long trip
  • Is so much more comfortable and quiet
  • Can still explore down a muddy forest road without fear of getting stranded

I now steal it for any trip that involves 4 or less of the family and is longer than 2 hours. Anecdotally it seems there are quite a few JT owners that have or have had a Subaru.

We got a 2016 BMW X5 50i, if you want some speed and comfort it goes nice with the Gladiator and fulfills the need for speed, twin turbo V8 normally does that. When my Gladiator gets paid off there will be a Porsche 911 in the Garage.
My sister had a '12 35d that was tuned. 400ftlb gives it a little oomph. :like:

I have a 2012 Chevy Sonic hatchback, manual transmission, that I picked up for $5700 back in October with only 77k miles on it. I average 35mpg in it, driving it back and forth to work and to the casino in Cherokee NC which I go to a few times a month. I figure if I take the 35mpg from that and the 15mpg from the JT then I'm averaging 25mpg combined? I find myself wanting to drive the Sonic less and less though.

it reportedly weighs over 6k. I’d consider that a vehicle that’s too heavy for easy towing even on a trailer

The XC90 is a great vehicle. It’s what I traded for my Gladiator, and it broke my heart.

Unfortunately, it can’t tow much and you can’t track it (well… I did once, and it was fun, but still a little awkward) :/

Perfect compliment in my book, it’s a tow vehicle for the Gladiator and/or a small fun sports car.

Still working on the tow vehicle :)

Oh, and my husband still has a Volvo. So we’ve got responsible mini SUV still covered. He loves that thing.
You tried to sneak this little gem in without mentioning it by name. A World Rally Blue Pearl Subaru BRZ. Nice! I had one the first year they came out, a 2013. I traded it for my first WRX STI. It was a gateway drug.

The Gladiator is our "comfortable" vehicle.
While this is also a convertible (seriously, for where I live, why own a vehicle that isn't ?) this complements the Jeeps well for us. It gets a bit better mpgs (not that I really care), but it is FUN to drive in ways the Jeeps just aren't.

The Miata is always the answer! Ha! I actually traded my Ram 1500 and sold my ND Miata when I got the JT, thinking I'd mix convertible and pickup into one. My JT is my daily, and my wife's vehicle is a JLU, so quiet comfort isn't in our current stable.

I miss my Miata, maybe one day will have another... but definitely won't give up the JT.
