Howdy folks, on a trip in Western PA and when pulling up to a lake we planned to let the boys drop a line in and I noticed a strong plastic burning smell for a few seconds. It was just us so I’m confident it was my truck. Parked, popped the hood and I could smell it lingering. Crawled under, checked the entire undercarriage and engine ay and nothing. Decided to start it back up, let it idle while looking for a source and nothing. The smell didn’t return. That was just before lunch, we were out all day and it never returned, no errors thrown and truck is running great as ever.

I woke up this morning and remembered reading about a harness that is in a heat vulnerable position from the factory but I can’t remember where the heck it was nor seem to turn anything up in search. I even checked the Wrangler site.

Does anyone remember where it was? Thanks in advance for any insight!!!

I am interested in this as well, I bought a new utility trailer yesterday at Home Depot and everything works ok, first time plugging anything in to the tow package. And in the parking lot of a shopping center I thought I caught a whiff of something like you describe. Checked lights and wiring and nothing felt warm, everything working !?

Yep, everything is working just fine. I am hoping maybe it was a piece of factory tape or a part sticker that found its way to something hot.

I have read on here about a trailer wiring harness. But was due to backfeed when the trailer was hooked up to the truck and also plugged in to power at same time. Not sure about anything under the hood.

There has been a couple of reports on the trailer wiring harness. On the diesels. On the right side of the motor. Wiring is close to the exhaust bracket or something that rubs on the wiring. .

My recollection is wiring up front, right side, close to exhaust.
Yeah, that might have been diesel.

Depending on mileage, there could be things burning off the cat or other exhaust parts, but that should be long gone after just a few miles.

Each line going back to the trailer connector is protected by a fuse. The only line not is the ground.

Thanks for the feedback. We made the 3 hour trip back home today without incident, I crawled under at a rest stop while letting it idle after roughly 2 hours on the road and nothing. Haven’t had a chance to check the trailer wiring harness, will do in the morning for sure. Thanks again!
