Which is wider....33/12.5/17 or 285/70/17......I'm going back to 33 inch tires as commute to work is really long. I like the shorter wider look and was wondering two things.....
1) Do wider after market wheels make tires look wider?
2) Is there certian brands that make a wider tire

Sorry for the questions.......I don't know much about tires....

Looks like the 33/12.5 is a little over 1.25in wider.

Wheels won't impact width appearance from the front/back. From the side if you get some deep rims sure it can make 33s look chode-y.

285 is your width in mm, so 11.2

The 33/12.5/17 is wider than the 285/70/17. I believe you'd need an aftermarket wheel to accommodate the 33/12.5/17, but could run the other size on stock wheels. Check the tire specs of what your looking at and it'll tell you the wheel width you need.

I'm using this tire height calculator.

https://tiresize.com/height-calculator/

If we use the 285/70-17 as the standard, its 285 mm wide and 32.7 inches tall.

The "70" in that tire size is the aspect ratio. It means the sidewall is 70% as tall as the tire is wide. So the sidewall is .70 x 285 mm tall.

So if we make the tire wider but lower the aspect ratio, we end up with a wider tire at the same height.

Lets try 315/65-17 = 33.1 inches tall.

Want lower? 315/60-17 = 31.9 inches tall.

Want wider and lower? 325/55-17 = 31.1 inches tall.

I hope this helps.

Tire calculators are great.

What is even better, is going to the manufacturers website and checking their stated physical dimensions of the tire.

Not all tires makes are the same.

Great site and also to make the comparisons easier I've been using this for a couple years from the same place.

Tire size comparison.

This is a smart thing to do AFTER you have used the tire height calculator. Since 5 minutes with a tire height calculator can let you do a dozen what-ifs and zero in on a range.

One down side to a tire height calculator is that you could end up with a strange size that nobody makes. Ha.
