My hook (Harbor Freight hook that comes with the Badland 12k winch) is rattling and bumping! I want to minimize the noise, so as I see it, I've got two options and I'm trying to decide between them:
  • Buy a winch hook isolator and put it between the hook and the fairlead on the line
  • Pull out enough line to attach the hook to one of my d-ring shackles
    • BUT the bumper I've got has a winch guard hoop, I'd either have to loop the line below the hoop, or over the hoop where it attaches to the bumper itself (there's a good 1" maybe 1.5" between the hoop and the bumper)
I know getting a "thimble" style hook is an option, but for the moment, I'm looking to keep the cost down.

Also, thank you everyone for putting up with what I'm sure are very basic, newbie questions. It's my first Jeep and my first winch :)

I just run mine in carefully until there's some tension, holding the rope snug and keeping the hook flat against the rairlead.
I do want to protect that 1" or 2" of rope in the weather, but the truck is usually garaged when not driven.
Mine doesn't rattle or move around. I've found no real wear anywhere. There's always a tad bit of tension.

@ShadowsPapa I thought, when I swapped out the stock fairlead, I'd reeled it in and put it under a bit of tension, I'm wondering if maybe the line shifted a bit and put some slack in it...

I think in the morning I'll try the "free" solution you've provided. :)

That is the same way that I had my hook secured, I now have the shackle mount and keep it with tension as well. I have not had any issues with the winch losing tension.
