Hey fellas -

searching out chains for 40/13.5/20R has resulted in failure.

Best I can find is:
40/13.5/17R

would that work? I know the sidewall would be taller on the 17r but the overall diameter of the wheel should be the same as they are 40x13.5

thoughts?

While either tire will probably not be exactly 40” diameter, they should be close enough.
Be sure to get a good set of tensioners to take up any slack, even if the chains say they don’t need tensioners.

I'm not a S.M.E. on tire chains but the rim size I wouldn't think it's part of the equation on tire chains, tire diameter and width should be the measurement. The tire chains I had for my LJ (31/10.5Ă—15) was the size for Sport JT (245/70Ă—17) if I remember correctly. The rim wasn't part of the sizing. What ever you do darn well make sure you secure them chains good. They will tear S### up if chain / cable comes loose. :like:
