I'm going to use a fan plugged into the AC outlet while tailgating for a few (5?) hours. Is that too long to run it without cranking the engine to recharge the battery?

lets estimate the fan uses 50 watts. 5 hours x 50 watts = 250 watt hours. Or 20 amp-hours.

That's a trivial amount of energy compar4ed to what a car battery holds. I'd say no problem.

But even still, I'd start it a couple of hours in just to confirm no issues.

ACC shuts off after about 40 min.
So you will need to recycle the key every 40 min. Or better yet, get an external inverter and attach it directly to your battery.

What is the amp draw your fan? If 3A, 120v that would be about 30A on the battery plus the trucks draw on ACC. After an hour that is 30A/hr consumption. Thats working the battery pretty hard and would not go 5 hours.

No idea what the draw is. It's a Lasko Wind Machine -- just an ordinary house fan.

It is labeled for watts or amps if it is UL listed. Take a look.

A Lasko L3300 draws 165 watts, 1.375A @120v. Your inverter will be pulling about 15a suppling that. I wouldn't go more than 3 hours. I don't know the trucks draw on ACC but alot of stuff is running. You need to take that into account too.

Pulling more than 1/2 capacity of lead acid battery is detrimental to its lifespan. Can't tell you what the battery state of charge needs to be to start the truck.
