I only wish it would rain. You'd think with dew points 77+ there'd be enough moisture and the high temps would generate the energy - but nuttin.
It sure as hell isn't a "Dry heat" here other than the lack of rain.
We're already about 1.6" below normal just for August.
I wish I could send some of the rain we're having here to you.

I wanted to move to Texas because of your decent IT scene and to get out of Wisconsin. It's been hard to find a way to make it happen as a bunch tech people from the west coast moved in and drove up prices quite a bit. Any advice on how that looks today / where to look? Austin is obvious but i'd rather live anywhere else in TX. I only ask because your Home location is localhost/loopback and your name is foo.c so I assume you def don't work with computers and you live in Texas :)
I have some relatives who live in Austin and had some friends who lived there. My high school friend baled out. Sold his house for crazy money cause somebody was crazy to pay him for it. He now resides over in North Carolina near some new community in Wilmington. My relatives still there but they tell me the Cali crowd, etc have driven the prices sky high and all of the old locals were selling to get the crazy money. San Antonio is desperately trying to get in on the action. Hope not really like San Antonio but if it goes the way of Little Cali who knows

I've been way out west of the Mississippi where it's way beyond 100F each day. I was working on a roofing crew at that. Let me tell you, 110F out there is baby food compared to what people east of the Mississippi have to deal with. When it's 95-105F but the dewpoint temp is 80F and there is zero breeze whatsoever, that's when your body finds it really hard to function. It's a totally different animal. I'd take 115 out west over 95 in the east six days a week and twice on Sunday.

The 30 year averages show that excessive heat has killed more people than tornadoes and floods. Nobody takes the heat index seriously.
Awe, come on dude - east of the river? How about the west side, too?
We take the heat index VERY seriously (see below - the tweet I copied and the Iowa media station comments - from two different broadcasters)
It even gets hard to breathe. We wear head bands to keep the sweat out of our eyes. Hot sellers at the Iowa State Fair - neck fans.

Examples - when my shop was built I couldn't afford the electric - so that was done the following spring. The electrician was to arrive in an hour, I opened the overhead doors (and shouldn't have) and in less than an hour, there were pools of water all over the floor and the whole thing was totally wet - I mean walk and splash, get your feet wet. It was that humid. He came in and said he wasn't so sure he wanted to do the job standing in water - but ended up doing it. It was so humid the air hit that floor and apparently the dew point was above the temperature of the floor.

The past 2 or 3 weeks we wake up to windows so fogged up we can't see out - and my wife only keeps the AC at 77 to save money. So the windows were likely about 80 degrees at the coldest. That suggests the dew point was about that as well.

A few years ago I noticed that there were grey and white spots all over the black upholstery of a couple of cars I was working on. The covers on my books also had the same stuff. It was so humid, stuff was growing on books, vinyl and leather in my shop. I had to have a mini split system installed to control humidity.

There are years where after I spray the weeds growing in the gravel drive behind my garage and along the side of my garage - between the neighbor's drive to our shops and my garage, when the weeds die, instead of turning brown and drying up and eventually disappearing, they turned black and mushy - and were there for about 3 months before fall arrived and the air dried. It was sort of funny as I figured that's likely what it was like millions of years ago when vegetation didn't dry up and blow away, it rotted where it stood, turned to mush.
Those weeds stayed mushy for week after week. Dead, dark green and black.
Once in a while when walking through the yard it actually stinks of rot. Stuff is actually rotting it's so humid. This year with the drought it's been different.

There are times when mowing the lawn when the grass is high you get the clippings that accumulate - normally those should dry up to the point they'd burn easily - not here. They are still wet, won't burn, a week later. Throw 'em on a fire and all it does is smoke.

Mildew and other stuff grows on retaining walls and vinyl siding. You have to pressure wash every few months.

Walk outside today (it was worse last week) and you start to sweat in seconds - the problem is, it does no good as it won't evaporate. I wash the mower off and let it sit outside for hours - go to put it away and it's still wet in spots.

Papers and books I have in the garage you have to be careful - the pages feel wet. Ink jet printed stuff will smear.

From one of the Iowa news stations -
CLARION, Iowa - The humidity in Philadelphia is no joke during the summer. Many days have dew points in the 70s, indicating an oppressively humid air mass that leads to instant sweat the moment you walk outside. But at least we've never had a 90-degree dew point.

Clarion, Iowa, reported a dew point of 90 degrees Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. Central time. The air temperature at that time was also 90 degrees, resulting in 100% relative humidity and a heat index of 132 degrees.

Some 130 miles west of Clarion in Maurice, Iowa, an even higher dew point of 91 degrees was recorded Tuesday evening between 5-7 p.m. Central time. The 5 p.m. air temperature was 93 degrees, making the heat index an astounding 141 degrees.

Come on, weather man ;) You know the reasons - besides we're in a perfect spot to have certain atmospheric "features" "pump" humid gulf air up to us (that's the term the local weather people use - "this system will be pumping more humid gulf air up this way........"

I'm north of Dallas, in the Plano/Frisco/Mckinney area. Housing prices are still off the rails a little here. I could sell my house in a day (or less), but you'll lose any profit buying anything right now. Building a new home is out due to material delays too. Thank you Covid. My wife's in IT, and there seems to be a good job base for that in this area (coming from someone not in IT). We've lived in this area for @ 20 years and love it. Great place to raise kids. Several large companies have relocated their headquarters to this area (Toyota, FedEx, Liberty Mutual, etc.), and more seem to considering this area.

You can probably count the number of times it's been 100 this year in north Texas on one hand. No kidding. June was mild, July was pretty mild, and August has been in the 90's but also in the low 90's which is pretty unheard of in August. Days like this are downright nice and if you move between the raindrops, you can enjoy a nice day.
Climate change will be the death of us all! We need to stop breathing! ?

Great, now the people of Houston suffer poor conditions, horrible hours, no bathroom breaks and other crappy working conditions so someone can make trips to space on the backs of his employees.

I’m no city dweller myself. I much prefer the freedom of my small business and the quiet small town life.

No city life for me - not even small town if I can avoid it. Gotta have free, wide open spaces, lots of trees and a big yard.

Frisco has blown up with new businesses. Pretty cool having the Cowboys training facility (The Star) so close too. They've built a great development around that. Restaurants, hotels, etc. The local high schools get to use the indoor training field for some of their games too.
