The prevalence of Jeeps on Eastern Long Island truly is nutty. If I drive 10 miles, I probably cross 20 of them. I would say the wave incidence is under 20%; much higher if confined to decked out rigs.

I understand high gas prices get folks worked up, but this seems to be a solution in search of a problem. Criminals are dumb, but stealing gas is a pretty intrusive and time-consuming crime for $100, and they wouldn't know whether you have $10 or $100 worth of gas until embarking upon that...
