build it to use that area as a storage box. At 49" its still plywood rated. If you want the full bed width build the top tier to sit on the bed rails then you have full width.

I like the ford ranger style much better. its a rollup so it does not take up much room. The 3 panel ones are bulky and a pain in the ass to store in the bed

anything custom could be built to fit. why couldn't you just frame in the side to tailgate width and have the slider start there?
