I didn't, but I should have. I ordered a quick connect/disconnect kit. The power lead rubbed through the loom and the insulation and found the nearest place to short out. Pricey lesson learned that could have ended a lot worse. Thanks for the kind words.

SHORTED OUT WINCH WIRE!! Smoked both batteries, and smoked a big fuse in the fuse box. No other damage. All is back to normal. Not a cheap shop charge, but dodged a huge bullet. Thanks for all your advice.
