  1. Un-lift a Rough Country lift

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in the far corner of Arkansas. It's a bit too far to drive. As to the DIY, I've replaced a head gasket (toyota corolla) and a rear differential (international scout). That's the extent of my auto wrenching. Is de-lifting something a handy novice could do on a driveway?
  2. Un-lift a Rough Country lift

My wife doesn't like climbing up into my Gladiator. Myself, I don't like the lifted look, looks out of balance to me (it was the only manual Gladiator around and it was a "relatively" good deal, so I went for it). So, I'm thinking of getting it de-lifted. What "new" parts will I need? For...
  3. Manual winch

^ As I said in the initial post, this rig is meant for raising timber frames, not recovery. I was just wondering if it could be used for recovery in certain instances. Theoretically* it could, using two snatch blocks and having a nearly dead-on approach angle. *In theory, there is no...
  4. Manual winch

This! Though, in my experiment, I only had to put significant back pressure on the handle for one revolution of unwinding. Then it was easy to continue to unwind.
  5. Manual winch

That is an impressive piece of hardware!
  6. Manual winch

^ I'm not following. But I don't have any work area. My neighbor was kind enough to let me use his drill press to make holes in the receiver extension to mount the winch and to let me use one of his trees as an anchor point.
  7. Manual winch

I did an experiment, but I don't know how realistic it was. Using a snatch block, I was able to winch the truck while in neutral but with the parking brake full on. This was on level ground. I looked like the kid in A Christmas Story, with multiple layers of protection, heavy coat,goggles...
  8. Manual winch

I'll be rotating the bents from horizontal to vertical. The feet of the bents will never leave the ground/foundation. I don't have the math skills to figure out the pull on the winch rope, but I know it will be significantly less than the weight of the bent.
  9. Manual winch

I'm not worried about raising bents with this rig. They will be 17 ft tall so going from horizontal to vertical will mean the apex will travel along a 27 ft long arc (if I've done my geometry calculations right). So no reset needed for a 33 ft winch. And no, I won't be shifting 500 lb logs! As...
  10. Manual winch

Well, the safe working load for that come along is 4000 lbs, so I think I would need at least one snatch block, meaning a reset after 5 feet of movement, 3 feet if I use two snatch blocks. That was why I went with the boat winch. I had thought of using 2 come alongs in series, but it seemed too...
  11. Manual winch

I'm working on adding a manual winch. I need it to lift/rotate timber frame bents into place for my cabin build. The winch is rated for 3500 lbs and a bent is around 500 lbs, so no issues there. The winch will be attached to the mounting bracket which in turn will mount to the receiver...
  12. Who else is learning what it's like to own a truck for the first time?

My Gladiator is my first Jeep and my first "big" truck. I have a 2011 Ford Ranger that is going to be a bit too small for what I want to do the next few summers (build a cabin). I got the Gladiator because it was a manual (like my Ranger). Everyday driving is so boring to me, unless I have a...
  13. We’re screwed! [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS. MEMBERS BANNED]

Well, I was born in Georgia but grew up in the UP, on the big lake they call Gitche Gumee, so...
  14. Cheapo roll-up tonneau cover

Beat me by $5. Good on you!
  15. We’re screwed! [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS. MEMBERS BANNED]

I feel bad about whoever traded in my 2022 Gladiator Rubicon with 12K miles. The window sticker in the glove box said $59K and that doesn't count the mods: full bed liner, 3 inch lift, 35s... I paid $39,495 and I know the dealership still made a good profit.
  16. Cheapo roll-up tonneau cover

It looks great from a distance, but the tailgate could match up better. Most of the problem is due to the bed liner. I have a TonnoPro cover on my Ranger; this one seems every bit as good. $145 on Amazon.
  17. I got a Jeep!

Thanks all! The links and explanations were very helpful. I get it now. Rock-Trac is the overall system/transfer case. So things aren't really that complicated :)
  18. I got a Jeep!

My first Jeep (bought yesterday) and it's a bit more complicated than I'm used to. My previous 4-wheel drive vehicles, an International Scout and a GEO Tracker were kind of simple. You put it in 4-wheel drive then got out and manually locked the hubs. That was it. This 2022 Gladiator Rubicon...
