  1. Diesel cooling options and ideas

I installed my scoops as well, but it's not been hot enough to do any real testing. I did roll around on the highway, up and down some steep grades, and overall may have noticed a few degrees difference, but those results would be anecdotal at best. So far, I rolled up and down the same stretch...

Maybe, we'll see if I ever get them. In the meantime, I'm going to order a scan guage/logger so I can track before/after temps. Not a huge deal if they don't work out.

You should be able to tow under max weight in all seasons. Period. If the truck cannot do that, Jeep needs to be upfront about it. From jeep.com's front page: I did not see anything about Fall, Winter, and Spring only. While I do not expect to rocket up mountain roads with heavy loads.. let's...

It will really depend on the weight you are towing, the ambient temps, and the load. For me, not in the mountains in Colorado or Utah, it's only happened on really hot days when going up and down hills. And even then, it's not every hill and has only happened 3 times for me. My guess is if you...
  5. Diesel cooling options and ideas

I feel the same. I ordered a set of hood scoops (well, back-ordered anyway) because they come with silicone plugs. That way I can plug them up during fording, car washes, etc. The scoops are a shot in the dark, but hoping they help.

So I'm curious if anyone has actually determined what is triggering derating? Is it the engine temps, the oil temps, the transmission temps? I personally would lean towards the transmission temps as transmission fluid starts to break down "varnish" around 220 (from my limited googling)...

I've had mine derate on moderate hills in Texas when it's above 90f. https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/so-disappointed-in-this-diesel-platform-wish-there-was-a-return-policy.46233/

No lift, but I am running 35" tires (around 100lbs per corner). And the first time it derated I was a little heavier than normal (loaded up for a week long trip with the wife). Second time though, I was really light, just me, and the trailer was empty. So likely pulling around 4500 lbs (2k...

Yeah, I get it. And I'm learning more about diesels and towing in general as I go. It just caught me by surprise, because honestly, I was not flooring or anything. Just trying to get up a hill the first time it happened. Anyway, I was initially pissed, but did some research, and while I am...

Nobody is talking about tow rating dude. I'm towing 1000lbs under max and have had the engine derate on hills in Texas. I'm not talking mountains here, HILLS. And no amount of research would have suggested that we should expect to do 45mph on the interstate during the summer. You seem to be the...

If you read the post I mentioned earlier, the Jeep cooling engineers said the hood was off limits.

Not sure about other trims, but for the Rubicon diesel it's 6500 lbs. I believe the Mojave diesel is the same.

Not the op, but for me, I did not buy the jeep just for towing. Heck, even a Ford F150 would be better at that. I bought it because it can tow a decent amount of weight and go off-roading. And not just gravel roads off-roading.. I mean rated trails rock crawling and all. And before we bought...

I've only had it happen to me on really hot days (95+ degrees), when towing ~4500 lbs, and going up and down hills and/or stop and go traffic. But when it does derate, and you are going up a big hill on I-10 (80 MPH speed limit), and the best you can do is 45mph with your hazard lights on...

Read https://jalopnik.com/the-engineering-behind-the-jeep-gladiators-tow-rating-1833657453 and you will see Jeep imposed limitations to what the cooling engineers could do. There are plenty of ways Jeep could have cooled things down, starting with redesigning/upgrading radiators, transmission...
  16. So, what is everybody towing?

Mine came with a bike rack upfront (I took it off), but you could fit two mountain bikes in the storage area if you took off the wheels. I snapped a pic to give you an idea. I have some stuff in the storage area, and the bike is not pushed in all the way either.

I'm going to try a few things: 1. Relocate the horns that block the top right and left of the radiator. 2. Look at upgrading or possibly adding a secondary oil cooler. (maybe https://www.mishimoto.com/jeep-gladiator-performance-transmission-cooler-2020.html if it fits the ecodiesel) 3. Reducing...

B.S. First, if I just wanted to climb rocks I would have bought a wrangler, not a mid-sized truck. When a manufacturer states you can tow up to a certain amount of weight, you EXPECT to be able to tow that without needing to put on your hazards going up hills in the summer. Why else would you...
  19. So disappointed in this Diesel platform; wish there was a return policy.

I've had mine do that in high heat, towing ~4.5k lbs, on 35's on hills in Texas. I bought the Gladiator for the sole purpose of towing a travel trailer to places I want to explore (Colorado, Utah, etc.). Now I'm beginning to regret my decision. Like, do I have to wait until winter to go up hills...
