Very little actual pressure to move the step platform at all. But, can the kids pick their foot up high enough? Should work fine for kids in general. Spring pressure is just enough to keep the step up and stowed.

That is definitely the minimalist approach fantastic. Might also look like a tootsie roll to a big foot.
