No clue on the 8speed but my 4L60E does this when it’s low on trans fluid. It can’t build enough pressure and holds 3rd. Assuming you were low on transmission fluid.
I’d just use foam board insulation. You’re going to have a bunch of thermal loss from the canvas sides so the small benefit of spray foam is not worth the cost in my opinion.
I came from a built Lexus so not the same but still IFS. My Mojave handles the desert like champ and is a blast to drive. Around town with stock tires it’s a bit stiff but that’s the nature of the beast I guess.

I’d build a 80/20 extrusion ladder frame with thin corrugated plastic on top. Super light weight and you can use the extrusion for gear storage mounts and hanging. Let’s you utilize all the space available in a small area.
I did this install yesterday. Super simple. I also didn’t like the idea of running through the windshield but I folded it down and there is actually a ton of room. There is a small section where there is basically no weather seal next to the A-pillar and it fit perfect with no pinch.

I painted my whole camper in monstaliner for about 500 bucks. Been almost perfect sitting in the Arizona sun for 3 years. The only issue I have had is a little cracking and flaking on some high flex points. Most likely user error in the application though.
I got the Fox Factory Overland pad. The fit isn’t great because it either covers the handle or the camera. I kind a found a happy medium but it looks scrunched up.
