From what I'm reading, it is the actuation of the door latch. I think the unplugging the harness is not seeing the latch actuation...

I assume its the plunger that keeps the door from freely swinging open is actuating it internally because I've found no exterior detent button. Would it not be that it needs to see the action of opening the door and then closing? That's why I think a momentary switch that would simulate NC then...
