I was a bit of a problem child and my father was concerned about where my life was heading. He met a new mate, John. John was a friendly bloke, well-dressed with a pencil thin mustache. Some aspects of John's lifestyle were somewhat foreign to us in our homogeneous middle-class neighborhood. But he was a breath of fresh air, always in a good mood and entertaining us kids and complimenting our home decor.

I was at an impressionable age and my father was fearful that I might adopt some of John's tendencies that he found undesirable. Little did I know, my dad and some friends hatched a plan to counteract this and masculinize me instead. Things like taking me to the local steel mill to see the men working and sweating.

The final act was a hunting trip with his friends Moe and Barney. After we didn't find any deer at the local park, they took me to Santa's Village to bag some reindeer. This didn't go to plan as the reindeer attacked us. But guess who was there to save the day... that's right, our buddy John.

My sister eventually figured out the scheme and explained it to me. I was super confused because I wasn't like that at all. Something about a bunch of guys alone together in the woods... seems kinda gay.

Best part is the tradition - the appreciation for natural spaces and wildlife conservation being passed down from generation to generation is why we have the places we have in The United States and the opportunities to enjoy them.

Big shout out to Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. They do a great job preserving spaces for us. They even keep amazing non-ambulatory areas for wounded warriors and others that may not be able to get to some nice spots without the use of a vehicle assist.

Man, that story took me on a whole journey—seriously had me laughing by the end. Sounds like your dad and his buddies were really committed to their plan. And John? Low-key the unexpected legend in this whole saga.

Also, “hunting reindeer at Santa’s Village” might just be the wildest plot twist I’ve heard all week. And that last line? Gold.

Appreciate you sharing this—it’s one of those stories that sticks with you. Curious though, did you ever end up going on another hunting trip after that… or was that one enough for a lifetime?

Hunting has always been an exciting part of life for me and also a means of providing food for my family. Getting to and fro for the hunt has made the Jeep Gladiator an amazing fun vehicle. I have a bear hunt planned for early fall and will be doing a lot of prep work all summer for that...
