I have seen some pretty amazing DIY racks and plenty of fairly expensive, for my budget, builds. Has anyone taken a cheap Amazon bed rack and added side panels?
I may be crazy posting here, but my ideal rack is something that I can remove the rear crossbar when needed and still be able to use the bed.
I'm thinking about buying a cheap universal rack and designing and welding in some CNC cut panels for the sides. This would hold overlanding accessories when I need them.
Will it save money going this route, IDK. Or sould I just bite the bullet and get something off the shelf?

Bite the bullet and get off the shelf unless you are fabricating the entire thing. IMO you're rolling the dice on how much R&D and mathematics went into the products you are building upon, and you don't wanna find out the shortcuts they took, when you are overlanding.

I am working on designing some type of system with removable panels for when we want to go camping but that I can easily remove and use my truck bed for whatever. I have a soft top and use is all the time (all seasons if its nice), so the wedge style options don't allow you to do that, i also don't have the money for one... but they are super cool!

That is a super awesome rack!!! Thank you for mentioning it... I had not heard of it and also hadn't been on here in awhile so hadn't seen any of their product posts etc. I definitely think that has the potential for what I'm looking to be able to do. Again, I appreciate your response!! Happy Adventures!!
