last winter y'all were freezing yer Texasses off ... hmmm
It got cold for down here for our infrastructure. Problem is most of the houses down here are not built for cold weather. Hell I never lost power and my heating system could not keep the house warm.

Yeah, I feel bad about everything that happened in TX. I think a lot of people Up by me heard about your problems and scoffed not understanding everything in our infrastructure and homes is built around our crazy weather. I think the funny thing was seeing all of the 4x4 lifted rigs sliding around like baby deers on ice my Mustang GT would have flew through with my tires lol. If we had to deal with your heat our society would collapse in a similar fashion I'd think.

I've lived here my whole life (almost 50 years) and what I would call super cold weather is pretty rare, but it's happened before without near as much drama.

The problem, IMO, is the high population growth. The grid was fine 10 years ago, it just hasn't kept pace.

I wanted to move to Texas because of your decent IT scene and to get out of Wisconsin. It's been hard to find a way to make it happen as a bunch tech people from the west coast moved in and drove up prices quite a bit. Any advice on how that looks today / where to look? Austin is obvious but i'd rather live anywhere else in TX. I only ask because your Home location is localhost/loopback and your name is foo.c so I assume you def don't work with computers and you live in Texas :)

I can't really speak to the job scene because I'm very insulated from that. I've worked from home since 2005 for the same non-IT company as a software dev. It does appear to still be a growing market though.

Austin used to be a weird hippy town. Cool vibe, no one seemed to take anything seriously. I can't recommend Austin or anywhere in Travis Co. anymore as the inmates are running the asylum. Homeless people everywhere, everyone's mad about something, traffic sucks.

The housing market feels like it is starting to level off, but prices are still up 50% from where they were 5 years ago. I personally wouldn't buy a house here right now, but if I could predict housing prices I'd be in a different business.

Yeah, I just want to live somewhere with a decent tech scene where work is interesting and not political I guess. I'm not sure if that exists in that world but I'll keep looking. I appreciate the insight though!

it might not matter soon. I sit in an office all by myself. Rumors are most places are keeping remote as leases expire, which with all the crap around Delta might mean tons are going to expire before anybody even goes back

Normal? It will be a new normal. Most companies I've talked to - and those my son has worked for and is looking to for a new job are making "work from home" or "remote work" the new normal.
We talked to a woman who still works were my wife and I used to work - she says few will actually come back to the office.

I did something I swore a couple of years ago I'd not do - watched 5 minutes of the news today. Luckily it was the weather part, not the other #$%@.
An area about 60-90 minutes from us and in the same dry swatch we're in say they are 20" DOWN for the year.
