Does anyone know if the two sections that house the 12v port and the media hub are a direct swap from side-to-side? Or even better, if there is anyone making any sort of blank off plates to allow you to remove one or the other and just have a clean slate in that little area? I'd like to keep my 12v port but have no use for the media hub and would like to do something else with that real estate...

I guess that also begs the question as to whether there would be any adverse effects from disconnecting the media hub from the dash? Would it cause the U-Connect system to freak out or anything?

Be media hub you mean the USB ports to the right near the glove box?
That's not really the hub - that's just ports. There are cables that plug into the back of those ports.

As far as swapping, I've had the things all apart and I see no way to swap things around even semi-easily.
the #1 USB port there is how the radio is updated when new software updates come out.

The blue is the 12v outlet.
Big cable in the middle is for the window switches (with the red latch on the connector)
What is disconnected is the USB ports, etc. The other connector that is in the upper right in the photo the way the photo is showing is the aux switches.

I will have to find the post but there was one about a 3D printed panel to replace the media hub. I would love to just remove the media hub door.

My apologies for the vernacular mishap, I was just using what I'd seen all over the innerwebz:
