Going to be out there in August for a family reunion. Curious if there are any trails for me to try out my Mojave suspension. Nothing crazy doubt any family will have a truck to join us.

There is/was a dirt road going from the south to the north unit of Theo's Nat Pk. Some historic cabin along the way. Don't know how 4x4ish it is. If pressed for time there is also the paved highway.

By the way, on our visit the south unit it was: "Hey everyone! There's a bison way over there! Grab some binoculars!" The prairie dog towns are fun to watch. The town is a tourist trap but still fun. Supposedly the history play they do/did in town is great.

The north unit was: Road blocked by an entire herd of bison! Everyone stops. The bison take a half hour gradually grazing their way amongst the cars, bison everywhere right next to you, both sides of the road and out into the scrub. One bull charges another and knocks it completely down and it rolls once before getting back up. A motorcycle lady is frozen on her cycle with her head down as bison slowly go past her within 10 feet. They take their time, she's frozen for minutes. Eventually a ranger shows up with a pickup, hits the siren and lights and horn, and scares the entire herd off the road. Motorcycle lady can start breathing again. Someone says they had a herd of wild horses roar past and had to yell at their kid to stand still as the horses streamed by. Had a bison walk right behind me between camp sites and didn't know he was there until he was already past. Awesome scenic overlook at the end of the road, but during a previous visit I had to drive slowly through a herd at 1 MPH to get to the overlook. Spooked a calf slightly. Stupid move.

There are some scenic byways in N. Dakota (paved) which are pretty nice. And the state museum is great. There is also a good Lewis and Clark museum somewhere up there.

Thanks will look for it. Kids might like the prairie dogs, but I grew up with them all over when I was in Colorado. We called the solar panels, they were always out in the fields sunning themselves.
