My chonk (he is really just big boned and muscule) of a springer has the same problem. Anything I have found is too rickety for him to trust and feel comfortable. I swear I saw a door extender that allowed the door to open further without going all the way -- but cant find it RN. If I sued that, I think it would allow for better products-- just not sure how portable they are if you are on the go.

I saw that Quadratrac had one that zips around the cables with several loops as options, but no answer to my email how far the door can be extended.

If anyone on the forum can fab something from seatbelt material, or anything durable enough, I would love to get one set for the rear

My dog put the only dent into my jeep the first week I owned it by jumping in the back door. Paintless Dent Repair was able to get it probably 90% out. Now I load them through the front door or carry them in the back. I am actually building a "dog box" for the back of my Gladiator using a Rebel Offroad Xplor Rack and the new Molle Rear Hatch Door. I installed a BedRug and am just waiting on the door now..

The same. I am using a large tupperware container that carries my detailing products. A couple training sessions to use that as a step and done. No more flying knees into the weak areas.

Lots of great replies. I’ll follow up on some of the products linked. Didn’t even think about fashioning a step that uses the rock rail. I may play with that idea over the weekend. Our pup is tall enough that with a single largish step, he might climb up fine.

Fairly old thread but I had the same problem with my giant schnauzer. She’s a princess and only jumped in when she wanted to otherwise I’d have to heft her big arse up there.

I bought her a vest like so (not exact one):

it’s super nice actually. The handles let me throw and lift her around easily, there is an attachment point for a seat belt, and I can hook her to my backpack if we ever have to jump out of a helicopter.

Edit
Since we posting dog pics:

Loading our 150# newf has become a chore. When he DOES get in on his own, it is painful to watch. When we help him up, it is literally painful on my back! There just isn't a lot of room on the floor behind the seat for him the clamber up, and the seat is too high for him to jump. The back door being so narrow doesn't help, I'm sure. Neither do the taller tires (sorry, pup), which put the door at 27" and the seat at 36".

So, looking at ramps and steps. All kinds of choices. Most seem too wide for the space. As mentioned above, the door just doesn't open wide, and is narrow to boot. Height doesn't seem a problem. Getting to 27" would let him step up to the seat, and would actually be the same height as our other sport-ute's rear hatch.

Not pulling the rear seat, as we use the under-seat storage and my kiddo sits back there (yes, with the dog - they snuggle). The back seat actually works fine once he is up.

Unloading would certainly be easier on his joints with a step or ramp. He can kamikaze out today, but it is more of a belly flop.

Guessing this would be easier door-less. Still a bit chilly here in the midwest for that.

So, has anyone found the ultimate solution?

Did you find a solution? I also am thinking of getting a gladiator but I have 2 large dogs and I have dog steps but thinking they probably won’t work with the side door of the vehicle

Guess I should post some follow-up FINALLY.

Using this step from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IZZDRR0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was the largest platform size that still folded down, and was heavy-duty enough for his 160# weight. He can get both front and rear feet on the platform and clamber up to the rear floor (with the front seat slid forward) and then to the seat. He looks like bull in a china shop while doing it, but seems happy enough. Does not use the step to get out - more of a "bonsai" and hope for the best.

My 125 lb American Bull Dog would hit the running boards and then the back seat of my Overland. No problem in or out.

New Mohave was higher with no boards. Too high for Gus.
I looked at pet stores and tried ramp from Amazon which would not work bc of back door and angle.

Solution:
Horse Step from Tractor Supply.

Works great
Will try and post pi but I am pretty soft on tech
